Multiple APs - ESSID or multiple BSSID
If I use an AX1500 as a wireless router (router mode) and another AX1500 as an AP (AP mode) on the same LAN segment do they form an ESSID or just multiple BSSIDs? Put another way - does this configuration support roaming? Assume the units are different hardware versions.

Roaming is a feature of your wireless device. A wireless device will roam between the two routers for sure.
The smoothness of this roaming will depend on your wireless device and the routers in your network.
A seamless roaming (wireless mesh, like Easymesh) uses protocols like 802.11 k/v/r to achieve this.
in general, if both of your routers support Easymesh you could use this guide to build it and benefit from the seamless roaming.
In your case smoothness will depend only on your wireless device since the routers won't form an Easymesh when using one of these in AP mode.
Here's a list of router models that support Easymesh in AP mode at the moment.
