Thanks in advance.

It's hard to run through existing posts for this questions, apologies if it's already there!

Comcast says they've increased network speed (to 500 Mbps) and my current cable modem (Asus CM-16, ~300 Mbps) won't be able to handle it.  I'm basically OK at the current speeds I get.

But I see that the cable industry is pushing to require (eventually) a DOCSIS 3.1 modem.

Fine, future proof and get a new modem.

But I'm not sure how the Deco 9 will handle this additional speed.  Will it bottleneck the ability the new modem provides?

I'm not even sure how to compare the Deco 9 specs

https://www.tp-link.com/us/deco-mesh-wifi/product-family/deco-m9-plus/#specifications

with the Comcast figure of 500 Mbps.

Is it as simple as the 5 GHz: 867 Mbps (802.11ac) - and the 867 is > the 500?

I appreciate your help,

Roaky

PS  The specs say that each M9 has two 2× Gigabit Ports.  But the Main or Hub Deco (connected to the modem) effectively has only one, true?

  @Roaky

You can indeed compare 867 to 500.

However, 867 is a theoretical maximum, the wifi throughput will actually be lower, and will depend on the distance and presence of obstacles between your devices and the Deco.

Also, 867 must be divided between the transmitted and the received traffic.

If you use wifi backhaul between your Deco, some data will travel several times by wifi, further reducing the achievable throughput.

Each M9+ Deco has two ports.  On the main Deco, one port is connected to the modem, hence only one port is available.

Thanks, Yves.

I know enough about network, etc to get me in trouble....devil

So many interacting elements.

Well, the 500 Mbps from the cable company is also theoretical. Since the main Deco has one available ethernet port, I have a router (reduced to a switch) after it to allow connection of various household network devices (thermostats, weather station, etc).  Since that's older, I'm upgrading it to a switch supporting faster speeds.

And, here now/right on our tails WiFi 6, 7, etc.  The Deco is just WiFi 5....so lot's, it seems, I could do to get more out of it.  The DOCSOS 3.1 seems like a good start.

Thanks again!  R
