New Release Deco Firmware Updates Released to Additional Models - July 2023
Hey Deco Users!
Over the last few weeks, we have seen a large number of models receive the 1.6.0 Firmware and Features, including Static Routes, IoT Networking, and Signal Preferences. Make sure to check for updates often, as more models are receiving the update each week and not all will be listed in these update posts. The models listed below are only the models listed as having received new features - additional updates were made available for stability and performance improvements.
If you have already received the features, continue checking for updates to your network as fixes and patches are being released each week.
Please Be Aware that Specific Features May Vary Between Hardware Versions, Please See the Linked Firmware Update Page for your product to get the most accurate list of features added to your hardware version.

The models listed below were previously updated to support some of the latest features. If you have one of the models listed below, check for an update to your Decos. If you do not see an update, check your firmware download page to see the latest update and features added.
Many models have received additional updates over the last few weeks, so make sure that you are using the latest version for the best experience.
Please See the Firmware Download Page for a List of Features Added for Your Model!
*Note: If there are other Deco models in the Mesh network, some features would no longer show up, such as Signal source and Connection Preference; while others only need the support on the main Deco, like VPN, Static Route, MTU, and smart DHCP.
As a reminder, our teams do not have any information regarding what models the firmware is being developed for and when we could potentially see a particular release. Please refrain from asking "When Will 'X' Model Receive the Feature?"

I can try to put together a list of the features that require all nodes to be up-to-date vs. just the main node to help with this at the very least.
Essentially, the features that are lost are the features that change how the device connects to the network, or how a specific deco node is meant to manage or forward traffic to the main node. Features that deal with your connections after they are 'funneled' to the main node will still exist. This means that features affecting your WAN connection, such as a VPN or MTU, will still be available.
For example. a node without the device isolation feature would forward the "isolated device's" traffic alongside the other traffic, completely undoing the purpose of the features. The Connection preference feature is another that requires all nodes because a node without the feature will not know that the device is not allowed to connect to it - causing both nodes to try and manage the device's connection - causing literal chaos.
Features such as MTU Size, VPN, Smart DHCP, and Static Routes only require the main node to support the feature since these functions simply refine or route traffic from your satellite nodes. (There are a few select exceptions to this, such as the Deco M5 not being able to receive the VPN feature on firmware version 1.7.0)

for the X60v1 - I am really not sure. The model released in 2020, and a few revisions have since been released since then. If the update is given to the model, it will likely be one of the later models to receive the feature. Many of the older versions are receiving the update now, but it does appear that it is taking longer to develop and release.
TP-Link actually considers 3 year old equipment to be old?

It's not considered old, just that it falls later in the timeline of developed devices. Hardware revisions are not always large jumps and may simply be a different chipset or a have additional optimizations made to the model.
Our team is working on reaching out to learn more about the priority of the development and what will be coming next. Recently, we have been releasing firmware for a variety of older models, so it's likely that you will see it soon.

Thank you for your detailed feedback.
I just learned from you that TP-Link is moving to a new firmware platform and that will hopefully have great benefits to your engineer and end-users in the long term.
My devices are X20 v1.20.
I have another question that is not technical. I really wonder if there is a way to know the hardware version of your units from the box in the store.
Are different h/w versions of the same model produced for different sales regions?
I also tried to check with our local distributor but couldn't get a proper answer.

Thanks for checking on if older HW versions are going to be getting firmware updates.
From a consumer perspective, only receiving 2 firmware updates for a product, with the last one released a year after the product launch, isn't good customer service. It makes me debate whether or not I will continue to buy TP-Link products because I cannot trust that they will be supported for more than a year.

So there should be a label on the boxes that lists both the Model, followed by the Version. It should look similar to the upper portion of the label that is on the bottom of your Deco node. I believe that this is now the standard practice for all Deco releases.
Hardware versions can be changed for a variety of reasons, with smaller changes normally being for optimizations or manufacturing locations. In general, firmware is released either simultaneously or very near to each other. Major changes to hardware are seen with the larger hardware version updates. Minor version upgrades may even be seen depending on where the product will be sold.
And yes, the new Deco updates are aligning their firmware and features. We are already seeing the benefits of this, as the development of new features has increased exponentially. In fact, there will soon be another one of these posts for the latest features coming soon, such as whitelisting and matter support. Prior to the 1.6/1.1 firmware updates, the firmware for Decos were all over the place, with updates being pushed mainly for optimizations or security patches.

Long time and no more updates from TP Link side, I am losing my faith and trust in TP Link brand.

Hi Riley, this would be extremely useful. I have 3 different versions of x20's in my network due to rma's and am wondering what one I should use as my controller. (Should I take the effort to switch the locations) I have v1's that don't have the new features (just yet hopefully) a v2 and a v3. I am glad to see these firmwares being standardized as you do not know what version you will get from an online retailer so it makes planning an bigger deco network hard.
I did just have to manually update my v2 and v3 however as they where stuck on very old 2021 firmware.
Thanks.

Keep an eye on our main forum - this post was for 1.6 in July. Since then, we have even been preparing for a 1.10 release. There have been quite a few additional releases since this update back in July, along with many more models receiving the feature updates.
It's worth mentioning that depending on your model, it will either take much longer or may not even be possible for the model to support the features in the latest updates. If you have a version that uses the oldest hardware revisions, these will take priority. This is one of the advantages of having many of the features controlled by the main node - as you could upgrade your main node to receive a large proportion of the features while waiting for a potential update.
The V1 did just recently receive an update that looks to prepare for the coming HomeShield features, but the update before that was quite awhile ago.
