Blocking Government Property Tax Website??

Model: Archer AX11000
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.1

We have Fiber Optic provided by Century Link.  Their router (C4000XG) kept dropping some home network connections.  So, we purchased the Archer AX11000 which solved the dropping very effectively.  Spent the major funds because I thought it might also improve speed... did not do that.  (We 'only' get around 800 down & 430 up - with a max of 940 both directions...)

Anyway - been waiting to pay property taxes.  And Washington State Okanogan County - had a link to pay, etc. that was always down.  Never able to get to it.  Finally called and was going to point out that it wasn't working - but found out it was totally working...  So after I find out it was supposedly working - went to my phone...

My phone using regular network has no problem going to this specific tax page.  If I tell my phone to use my streaming home network - it loses accesss to this specific webpage.  If I plug the old C4000XG back into the nework; and my home computer into that - I can access the web page to pay my taxes.  Go back to the AX11000 - and it won't access.

I have temporarily disabled all antivirus in the Archer router - did not help.  I normally have the UPNP disabled (for security) - but enabling that also had no effect.  I have no young kids; and we have no website blacklisted.  That field is empty.  I haven't found a way to whitelist a website - since you have to enter a MAC address - which of course I don't have for someone else's computer system...

I've paid my property taxes (via phone) - so this is now very much a curiosity question.  I just have to remember that  https://okanoganwa-taxsifter.publicaccessnow.com/Search/Results.aspx  cannot be accessed  via my home computer unless I change out the Router...  I have access to the main Okanogan webpages - just not the one where you can input your parcel, etc. and see how to pay...   But what if I run into another website that it won't allow me to enter?  It doesn't give any warning - it just sits there trying to connect - and eventually states it "timed out".   So you tend to believe it is a website problem - and NOT your router not letting you access a perfectly good website!

Where is "Trend Micro's" database located??  I went to their website - found it confusing.  And probably/possibly the Archer AX11000 downloaded a database or has one IN it - which is constantly updated??  I mean - I have no idea right now - what I could change settings wise in the Router - to allow it to let me see a perfectly ok website...

Finally, most of the changes made above - were done One Section at a time - but I did not reboot the Router.  Because everytime you reboot - OR even just unplug the WAN connection; and than reconnect  - you get a new ISP address assigned - which screws up some camera settings, and other stuff on my network.

My phone is an older Samsung Android.  My home computer is a home built older Windows 10; with an ASUS Z87 Deluxe/Quad motherboard... if people want to know what system we are using.

If you know what is going on here; and let me know - I would appreciate it.  Thank you.

As far as your cameras go, you should use address reservations and a DNS service such as NO-IP so an ISP IP change does not affect your connectability.

When I change router settings, I like to ether reboot or power cycle as some setting do not happen until to do. Not fun when the router stops working after a power outage a month or so more after your router changes. I suspect, you may need to power cycle to get some of those changes.

Hi.  Do you have any idea or thoughts on what setting should be changed or tried - to get it to allow access to the website?  I agree that I probably should be rebooting - it gets a little bit old - when it still doesn't work.

Thank you for the reply; and any other thoughts...

The router uses the following website as a reference when classifying sites:

https://global.sitesafety.trendmicro.com/

You can enter the URL and also put in a reclassify request if it has one already. When I looked up the site you mentioned it didn't know about it and mentioned it will be evaluated.

However, if you disabled the security feature in HomeCare such as the malicious website monitor then I think it should have not blocked it.

I've seen a similar case of an airline site being blocked (not this router), due to the IP being blacklisted. Where a user got an IP from the ISP that the airline site blacklisted. As you swapped from the router that did work and the AX11000, did your public IP remain the same or were different?

@Tony

Thanks for your thoughts and questions.

When I swap routers - the IP changes.  Totally.  Not to hard to find out what the new one is... just a slight pain to re-input into a few devices.  If I don't swap or reboot - the IP stays the same for quite a LONG time.  Might be forever as far as I know...

But, if I reboot for example the Archer - I will have a different IP.  If I swap to the older Century link - the Ip changes.  Kill power, etc.  But I do have UPS.

Thank you for looking up the site.  I am going to save the trendmicro link.  The evaluation of the gov't site - should not show anything negative; since it is a regular gov't website; which has NO problems - EXCEPT that my Archer AX11000 doesn't let me go there.  That is the rub.  My phone goes there; that's what I ended up using to pay my property taxes...

So your airline site being blocked was an interesting comment - but you also pointed out that Trendmicro wasn't blocking it... and Century Link (my ISP provider) - is not blocking it - since I can go to it - when i am hooked up to their router...  just when I switch to the Archer - do we have this one problem.  The Archer is much more stable in not dropping connections.  The C4000XG dropped stuff and messed my cameras and security all up - at least once a week.....  So, I'm glad not to be using it anymore.  Just trying to figure out the AX11000 and why it won't let me have access to this one site.  And it doesn't give any warning, or say it's a bad site - it just sits there - supposedly waiting for some answer - untill it times out...

If you have any specific ideas on what setting to change - I could try that.  Probably I should try the UPNP - and set that to Enabled; and then Reboot - to see if that does it... since most of these changes I just made and logged out - but did not reboot when I went to see if it made the site work.  My thinking is that maybe the gov't site for Parcel and Payments, etc. is for some reason also trying to open some port...

@DaveS777

Well, I enabled UPNP; rebooted the router, etc.  Did not help.  So, that wasn't the problem...  My Arris router for when I had Xfinity - let me go here to pay; the C4000XG lets me go here; my Samsung old Android phone lets me in - and I paid using that...  So, the problem is the Archer AX11000.   Just figuring out what little dot needs to be changed...

And if you are interested: Go to the following:

https://www.okanogancounty.org/Treasurer/   [I get to THIS page just fine.]

When you are on that page - CLICK on either "Parcel & Tax" info or the "Payment Options..."

They are the SAME link - and will take you to the page which my Archer AX11000 will not let load.   Just wondering if any of you have a problem getting there...

In continuing with the IP my reference was the public IP address.

So if when using the Archer router, your IP is 50.1.1.1 (just made up) and the old router is 64.1.1.1. I would try and get the Archer away from that IP. One way is to leave the router on, turn off your modem for about 5 to 10 minutes, then power it back on, and see if the IP changed. You can either log into the router and look at the status page to see your internet IP or google what your public IP is.

The LAN IP such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 would not matter, it's mainly the public IP since that is what the website would see.

@Tony

My public IP changes anytime the router is rebooted; unplugged; swapped; etc.  It is a dynamic IP which is assigned by my Internet Provider. I have no control over what it is - but fortunately - it is fairly stable and long term - as long as I don't reboot, unplug; swap out, etc.  the Router.

I do not have a Modem - since I presently have Fiber Optic - which does not use a Modem - it just uses a router.

My public IP is not an issue; it is not being blacklisted by the gov't tax website.  The problem is the Archer AX11000 and some setting with it - hopefully a setting which can be changed.

Did you by chance - try and see if you could go to the Okanogan County Treasurer website - and then click on the payment options link?  Very interested in others who have an Archer AX series router and what their experience is...

If anyone has a thoughtful suggestion on what changes in settings might be made to the AX11000; which would give access - I would appreciate it.

But I have paid my taxes; so as of now - it is a bit more of just a curiosity question.  I have spent a bunch of time looking at the various settings of the AX11000; and have not found a fix.

@DaveS777 ,

I tried and it worked for me, but not on the router you are.

Wondering, as a test, if you put the PC you were using on the DMZ, would it work? I assume it would by-pass the internal router checking?

@IrvSp

Thank you for the suggestion.  Tried that out - did not work.  Oh well.

I have a nephew who works for Intel as an IT specialist - my wife spoke with him today on this - and he basically said that TP-LINK makes consumer grade routers - and that we would probably need to get into the Log Files and Routing Tables - and be able to get access to the Command Shell - to accomplish a change and get this to work...  And that type of access doesn't exist with this router.

Appreciate your suggestion; but I'm hanging my hat up on this now - unless someone knows how to solve it with this router.  I mean - next year I will 'solve it' by swapping out to the old Century Link Router - pay my taxes - and then swap back to the AX11000

Just a bit weird.

I am not enthused with the 'security' on the router, no Residential Router vendor's either, no control at all. It is either on or off. Worse, you don't really know what it does.

Wife's gets email from some place, and on it is a link she NEVER takes, but the Home Care LOG has it blocked.

My iPad, Irv above, I was on my iPad and clicked a link on CNN (advertiser I think), and Safari put up a big RED screen blocking me via Home Care.

You got the same security probably do (see https://emulator.tp-link.com/ax11000-v1-us/index.html#antivirus I checked here to see } so look at the HISTORY link on the top right, it might show you the block?

Like I said, NO CONTROL, but you might know why.

I'll also assume you are using the SAME DNS on both routers. I'll use 3 different ones if I get into a situation I can't get to a place I want (assuming Home Care isn't blocking me):

  • My ISP's (default)
  • Google's Public DNS's, 8.8. 8.8 and 8.8. 4.4
  • Cloudflare, 1,1,1,1 and 1,0,0,1

ALL the above will (or should) block suspect sites, and I've got my PC Security that will too. Some people use OPENDNS as well. You probably need to disable ALL of Home Care if using one of these... if Home Care is the one blocking?
