I am cleaning up & indentifying all of the devices on my network. My relatively new TP Link RE220 is confusing me. There is a MAC address on the back of the extender, another as identified by my router and a 3rd one that is seen by the router but has no data. This is the same one shown on the extender's admin page. Any explanation for the 3 MACs?
What the extender will do is to generate a new MAC address for the connected clients. The first half of the MAC address should be the same as the client, and the other half is the newly generated one.
So for example:
Laptop MAC (connected to router): 11:11:11:11:11:11
Laptop MAC (through extender): 11:11:11:22:22:22
Thanks. I can see a TV that has the same first half MAC address as one of the 3 address I have identified as belonging to the router. There is only one item, a TV on the extender. So the other two addresses are? I will guess the adaptor to my router and its own transmission adaptor to the client TV? Just guessing.
The relation would be the same characters in the MAC so it likely is.
You could also try doing a constant ping to the IP address, then turn off the device to see what it really belongs to.
