Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.2.11

I recently got a set of three M9 Plus routers that are now setup in my house: fiber box <cable> main M9 <cable> secondary M9 <wifi> third M9.

The secondary M9 is where most of the traffic goes, since it is in my living room (2nd floor). Primary M9 is on the first floor and third is in 2nd floor hallway, about 10 m away from the second.

Measuring wireless bandwidth gives me good readings in all places and a low ping value, but if I set up a long-running ping I see recurring long delays every 30-90 seconds or so. Typically it goes from <10 ms to >500 ms for a few seconds, then back again.

When connecting by wire to the second M9 these glitches go away.

This doesn't really affect most of my day-to-day use like music streaming, surfing or watching Netflix or HBO, but it has a huge impact when using video or audio calls (Teams, Slack, Hangouts etc). Performing calls with wired access takes away pretty much all glitches, so it does not seem to be related to my ISP.

I have something like 25 different devices connected, cameras, printer, game consoles, stereo and I'm normally using Apple devices (MacBook Pro, iPad or iPhones) to browse and work.

My house is reasonably far away from surrounding neighbours (>50m to the closest neighbors, four in all) so radio interference from them should be minimal, although I can detect their networks. most of the time.

Any advice appreciated!

@Telcopro

Have you tried messing with the QoS settings?

Also in the QoS settings does it have the correct speed that you get from your ISP?

Hi Tony, Yes, I've tried with "Chat" setting but I still see spikes when testing with WebRTC test page (https://test.webrtc.org/?test_filter=Network%20latency), usually within 30-60 seconds. Speed is set according to my ISP, 600 Mbps up/down.

When you did the ping tests, did you also test on other devices such as a cell phone?

Yes, tried the same on iPhone and MBP, using Chrome and Safari. Similar results in all of them, regardless of location. Note: I was using the WebRTC test here, not regular ping. I've also tried nominating my MBP as "Prioritzed device".

Try leaving the priority on for that one device making the calls, and alst disable fastroam. As a test, you can look to disable all the HomeCare features to see if any of those may be getting in the way.

Hi,

Fast roaming seems to be off by default and I've left it off. Beamforming is on and I've set "High priority : on, all the time" for my MacBook Pro. Where do I disable "HomeCare"? I don't use any Smart-home features of the Decos although I do have a number of Smart Home devices and gateways using the network.

Typical "blip":

Another typical behaviour, this time with ICMP packets (ping):

Sorry I didn't mention how, go into the Deco app, on the main dashboard select antivirus and disable all three features.

Hi,

This is the third post in the forum i see about lag in the wi-fi.  DO you also have the V2 of the deco 9?

Please TP-Link do something about this in the next firmware.

Regards,

Dave
