I have the AC1750 wireless router providing internet for main house. Would like to extend wireless access to inside of metal barn that is about 275 ft away. There is a cable running from home router to switch in the barn. Would an access point be the best option? If so, which one?

Absolutely,  because the switch is connected to the main network at the house any router or AP connected to switch would work.  You could even a Range Extender Like the RE200 in AP mode and it would work.

Honestly my suggest would be to purchase a router like the Archer A9 and run it in AP mode.  The reason being should the main router go down you would have a working backup to replace it with till you are able to replace or pruchase a new one.

@Carl

Could I use something less expensive like the 300mbps wireless N access point? The only devices in the barn are a cell phone and streaming device.

You should be able to run an e CAT6 cable that distance, without much loss. If that doesn't work, then get a pair of CPE 510 units. Assign one as an Access Point, and assign the other as a Client.
