Issues using a TP-Link Range Extender with Spectrum Internet services
Current as of 4/12/2019
Affected devices:
- TP-Link RE450 (all versions)
- TP-Link RE400 (all versions)
- TP-Link RE355 (all versions)
- TP-Link RE350K (all version)
- Spectrum Askey RAC2V1K
*Note: TP-Link at this time is not aware of any other affected models. However, if you feel you have a model that is affected please contact us at ussupportteam@tp-link.com so we can help research our model.
Symptoms: The range extender will connect to the router, devices will connect to the RE, and they will be assigned a correct IP address (192.168.x.x) however, they will not be able to access the internet or communicate with the gateway address of the Spectrum router.
Cause: Internal testing has revealed the cause is the current firmware in the Spectrum router (version 1.1.16)
Possible Solutions: Currently we are working with Spectrum to fix the issue. In the mean time we suggest one of the following solutions:
- Request Spectrum to downgrade your router’s firmware to the previous version (1.0.16)
- Request a replacement router from Spectrum. We have confirmed the following models are not affected
- Segemcom RAC2V1S
- Netgear 6300
- https://www.spectrum.net/support/internet/modems-routers-wireless-adapters/
- Assign IP address to your client device manually (Static IP) *consult your device manual
- Make the range extender your DHCP server (See Below)
Making your Range Extender your network’s DHCP Server:
Step 1: Disable the DHCP Server of your Spectrum router
Step 2: Seth the RE450 to a static IP address with in the router’s subnet
Step 3: Enable DHCP Server on the RE450
Step 4: Change the Gateway and DNS settings. Both the Gateway and DNS servers must be the Router’s IP address. Example: 192.168.1.1

Still waiting patiently for a fix. Would love to not feel like I wasted my money on this wifi range extender... What a bummer, I know it's more on Spectrum's modem being the issue but it doesn't change the fact that the extender doesn't work :(

I was told on Friday that this should be now resolved on all affected models, through firmware updates. Although the issue with with the Specturm equipment our engineers found a software resoluiton. I was on PTO on Friday so i was not able to post this information. If you still have concerns with this after a FW upgrade please let me know.

@Carl Fantastic! Thanks for staying on top of this for over a year. You have been a trooper and I apperciate all your help. Is the firmware update on the Range Extender or on the Spectrum router? Thanks again!
edit: just check this afternoon, 5/27 @ 2:00 PM eastern and it looks like the firmware update has not been pushed to the range extender yet. Hopefully it'll be soon

Wish i could of done more then just ask for updates but we are sometime regulated to being messengers. From what I was told it is Firmware updates on our devices. Cable device updates are typically done OTA when you power cycle the modem/router or when they force one for you.
Best Regards

@Carl Just following up, do you know if the update is now being pushed via the phone app or if it will be uploaded to the tp-link support website? Last I checked a few weeks ago it was on neither. Thanks as always!

If the device has OTA cloud updates then the firmware is typically there before it is posted on the website. Generally speaking outside company holidays are when I am on PTO the website content like Guides, FW, Software and such are update on Fridays. What model do you have and I will check when the last FW was added.
