Phone keeps disabling WIFI connection

I have an ATT ZTE Z971, everytime the phone goes into sleep mode it disables my wifi. My roommate also has a ZTE phone through Cricket that does the same exact thing. I initially thought it was an issue with zte phones, but my HP laptop has been having the same issue over the last couple of days. Any ideas of what could be causing this?
