Model: ER7206 (TL-ER7206)
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Good afternoon,

I have an installation with more than 70 clients managed with Omada controller OC200 that incorporates ER605 router,  15 EAP access points, and a switch.

I need to change the router as internet connection fails from time to time and it seems to be the weaker point of the installation and want to move to ER7206.

Is there any protocol or procedure for its replacement or should I just disconnect one and connect the other? Doing so, how do I connect to the controller to adopt the new router?

In general would be good to have protocols defined for maintenance of Omada devices (how to replace the Omada controller, a switch, router, etc...) does it exist?

Thanks and best regards,

Pepe

Replacing the router is the easiest swap to make under Omada...as there's very little that is directly configured on the router.

The only precaution would be to retain connectivity so you can Adopt the new router without a lot of fuss.

Here's how I would do it:

Ensure you have a laptop connected and able to access the OC200 (wired directly to OC200 would probably be safest)

Power down the ER605, move the cables port by port to the matching port on the ER7206

Power up the ER7206 and wait for it to show as PENDING in the OC200's Devices menu

Adopt the ER7206 and verify that the WAN side has come up (ie if you have PPPoe settings) and the LAN ports are working correctly

Once you've confirmed the ER7206 is running, forget the old ER605 from your Omada devices

Your back out plan is just to power down the ER7206, move the cables back to the ER605 and power it up.

Just to add to the answer already provided, I have a video to show the steps.

  • From ER-605 to ER-7206. Note, this is with Default IP: https://youtu.be/XRi66VxzXPA
  • From ER-7206 to ER-8411: Note, this is with non Default IP and requires more "engagement" https://youtu.be/wugYR26JPPo

The steps are different not just because it's different devices, but because one is using Default IP vs non Default IP.

Also make sure to back up your network configuration.

@Death_Metal Thank you for your detailed answer

Finally yesterday I tried the change to ER7206, but I could not make it work...

As I have my default LAN in 192.168.0.x and router is 192.168.0.1 I followed your first video.

Problem is when adopting the router, at first it looks like it gets connected

After a few seconds of being apparently connected router makes a reset

Automatically controller tries to adopt again and then a adopt failed message appears

When I try to adopt it again I need to introduce user and password but controller says that they are incorrect, although I am sure they are correct (I even tried copying and pasting from Settings - Site - Device Account)

I remember I had something similar with when adopting a EAP, but after several attempts I could do. Could it be something from my OC200?

My OC200 is version 5.7.6 Firmware 1.21.7 Build 20221206

Finally I had to return to install my old ER605 and without surprises when adopting... fortunately because it is for an apartments building and people gets very nervous without internet... even on Sunday morning!

Best regards,

Pepe

@Death_Metal Could it be I have to enter admin/admin although it was for a few seconds "adopted"?

Hello Pepe, Sorry to hear about your issue. But like you said, and as I have shown on the video, the adoption can fail. In that video, I had to do it twice to get the adoption to succeed. The challenge is that, during adoption, Omada should at least give us a loading bar in addition to the text status whenever we are doing any activity on the device (such as adoption). This is why I have practiced doing a continuous ping as one of my indispensable tool with Omada :).... What I can suggest though: a) Don't adapt the new Gateway yet b) Connect a PC/laptop directly to it (left most port, make sure you are connected to LAN port) c) Go to 192.168.0.1 * If it's adopted, it will tell you. Do a hard factory reset (follow the steps on the web). * If it's not adopted, you can login and then do a factory reset. If it failed, do a hard factory reset * If it's not adopted, and it's still in original factory settings, do a hard factory resent Once you are 100% sure it's in original factory settings. Login to it locally again, then update to the latest firmware (if not yet updated). Then soft factory reset it. Then adopt it in Omada. Hope this helps...

  @Pepe8266

Hello, I just went through this process and didn't run into any issues.
I don't use default IP Addresses and thought I would check the forums first. I really appreciate the videos but I don't feel they were necessary.

Just make sure the Omada controller has a static ip
Steps.

1. Unbox the new ER7206
2. Power on ER7206
3. Connect directly to LAN port of ER7206 and login (You will be prompted to change your PW. This is normal)
4. Configure the IP Address and disable DHCP (Made things easier but probably not needed)

5. Forget old ER605 from the Omada controller.

6. Swap cables from ER605 to ER7206 (Best to keep the same ports)
7. Adopt ER7206 in the Omada controller. (Click Adopt twice. It will prompt for credentials)

8. Use the Omada controller to move the WAN port configurations
9. Done.

You shouldn't have any issues.
