Omada SDN Hardware Compatibility

Hello,
I was wondering whether the new omada sdn will support the current generation EAP245v3 and EAP225v3. Would it still be available self hosted or will it be cloud only?
Also will it support current jetstream switches such as the TL-SG1016PE, TL-SG3424P v1, or the T1500G-10MPS?
I'm looking to purchase a gigabit poe switch and I was wondering whether it would be worth it to buy a jetstream over a used one for the omada SDN.

Hi all,
I have some updates on the Omada SDN hardware support.
After some consultations among different departments, there is a plan to support SDN controller on following switch models.
T1500G-10MPS(UN) 2.0
T1600G-28PS(UN) 3.0
T1500G-8T(UN) 2.0
T1600G-28TS(UN) 3.0
TL-SG2210P(UN) 3.0/T1500G-10PS(UN) 2.0
T1600G-52TS(UN) 4.0
T1600G-52PS(UN) 4.0
The software developer will make new firmwares for the above models to support Omada SDN according to its plan list. It will take some time (depending on the plan list, roughly 3-6 months I guess) to get the firmware ready, please pay attention to the official product page for SDN supported firmware. Thank you for your great understanding and patience!
As for the current business routers including TL-ER6120, as far as I know, there is no plan to support Omada SDN for the time being.
I will reply here once there is further update on this topic. Thank you for your attention.

In addition to this, the following switches will have SDN firmware released in the near future, please kindly wait patiently.

Till now, there is no plan to add SDN firmware for other current products for the time being.

Hi @jabolfh,
I'm not sure what country you are in. But at least in the USA there has been little or no info released on the SDN yet. Release date, hardware compatability, etc.
I would assume that the current, and very well selling EAP's like the 225 and likely 245 would be included. I'm not very familiar with the swtich product line.
The SDN is essentially the next generation / enhances Omada server so I would expect that it would support most of the modern product portfolio. But I couldn't say what requirements it may have to manage these devices, E.g. ssh, SNMP, proprietary API, REST API, etc.

T1500G-10PS and -10MPS probably will be supported in addition to the new switches.
To be on the safe side, I recommend to wait until release of SDN controller before buying a new switch if you plan to manage them using SDN controller.

@JSchnee21 Thanks for the input, it's interesting hearing there hasn't been a peep from any of their marketing teams. I'm just stuck between buying the easy smart switch or paying more for a smart or managed switch for the future sdn compatibility. I'd really like to just configure vlans and such in omada and have an end to end solution without having to manage the switches manually. Thanks anyways!

@R1D2 thanks too thats a good point theres no safe bet. it sounds fair, the easy smart line looks like it only has a web gui whereas the smart and up has more management options. Its just they announced it more than a year ago so not sure if it is worth the wait. I mean by the time it comes out I could probably have learned the cli needed to configure enterprise hardware.

@jabolfh, if your focus is management options and a bunch of functions, you should select JetStream T series switches.
Easy Smart switches are for SOHO users who want to enter the world of managed switches and need only a vey limited set of functions. I use it for customers just needing VLANs, QoS and/or PoE as weel as easy setup methods through a web UI and/or a config utility.
JetStream T series switches are for small to large businesses and offer much more functionality. I use it for customers needing not only VLANs, but more adavanced features such as DHCP services, static routing, STP, QoS, ACLs, SFP ports, physical switch stacking, etc. pp.
I always read the User's Guide of every product I plan to buy, so I know what I can expect. For example, the UG for all Easy Smart switches has just 85 pages. Pretty easy to get an overview of its functionality. Compare this to the 832 pages of the (entry-level!) smart switch T1500G-10PS (UG only; CLI reference manual has another 426 pages). Alternatively, check out just the UG's table of content.
If you want to see the web UI, take a look at the emulators (but Easy Smart switches don't have one). For example, here is the T1500G-10PS emulator, albeit it still shows the old web UI – they recently got the new one. Here is the new web UI running on T1600G-28PS V3 as an example. The CLI is useful if you have to manage more than just one switch and/or if you're a cmdline guy and prefer to type commands rather than time-consuming click orgies.

@nojak, we are a WISP and Hotspot provider and have all kinds of businesses as customers, from small to big ones. Of course, L3 features like DHCP server, static routing (e.g. for Inter-VLAN routing), QoS etc. are needed in businesses nowadays.
For example, whether you do Inter-VLAN routing using traditional concepts such as one-armed routers is your decision, but I prefer to not send data back and forth between the switch and the router for just nothing if the switch can do routing, too. Regarding STP: if the customer demands a fail-over topology for his campus network, guess what happens if you tell him: »you’re just doing it wrong«.
YMMV, but IMO all those L2+/L3 features of modern managed switches greatly help to simplify network topologies. Remember: the switches and other devices discussed in this forum are SMB products, not SOHO products. @nojak @R1D2 Fair points I probably don't need advanced routing, the most L3 I need is just inter-vlan between my security cameras vlan and servers. I don't even know what half the features are for on those advanced switches. I guess it's just nice to have one interface for everything including vlans.

@nojak Thanks yeah I downloaded and installed the new controller and it didn't recognize the T1500G-10mps. I was kinda disappointed since the manual for Omada SDN showed it should here: https://static.tp-link.com/Omada%20Controller%20Upgrade%20Guide_20200615.pdf
I guess it makes sense for TP-link not to support the T1500G-10MPS since the TL-SG2210MP is pretty similar. Just kinda disappointed I have to go return the T1500G-10MPS and wait for the new one to be released.
