Don't know if this is the right place to ask this question, but it seems to be such a strange (maybe n00b) question, there won't be an actual category for it ;)

 

Situation:

 

I have a switch, with multiple vlan's configured.

 

VLAN 20: internal lan network, trusted computers, these have access to all other vlans

VLAN60: IOT devices and also printers, these only have access to the internet and to other devices in the same VLAN

 

Now, when connecting all devices, I made a small mistake, by plugging a network printer, with an static VLAN60 IP, into a port on the switch that is configured as a VLAN20. 

 

Now here's the strange part, at least for me: when I try to connect to the printer's internal webserver, I can't connect, I can't ping that IP address, but when I try to print something, that works!?!

 

When I found this mistake, I connected the printer to a correct VLAN60 port, now it still prints of course, but I can also reach the internal webserver of the printer.

 

Why dit it print, when it was clearly connected to the wrong VLAN port? Is the "printing protocol" something special? :)

Hi @Houseofdreams_,

 

When you mentioned the printer had a "static VLAN60 IP", did you access the printer configuration and save the ip address in the printer itself, or did you reserve that IP for the printer in the controller/dhcp?

And the "VLAN20" port profile has Native Network as VLAN20, only one untagged member (VLAN20) and no tagged members?

 

If you set you computer's IP to a VLAN60 address and both computer and printer are plugged into VLAN20 ports, are you able to ping the printer and access it's UI?

Yes, untagged vlan20, pvid 20.

 

Second part I'm not able to test right away. Maybe tomorrow

Hi @Houseofdreams_ 

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

You cannot reach the printer web, that could be a result of the firewall on the printer.

Not sure about your whole network diagram but based on the given information, if it is pingable, at least it is a VLAN interface. This should work by default. No need to configure anything special to access the web.

 

Only possible cause to me, that is the firewall on the printer.
