Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem that has plagued my network for some time, and is worsening. Most of my wireless devices experience at least one, but usually multiple, random connection issues daily with the symptoms described below.

  • The only affected devices are on the Wi-Fi. I have no issues with wired devices.
  • A device will be connected to the SSID, but will then experience issues reaching the Internet. This manifests in different ways for different devices:
    • Android devices featuring Dual Wi-Fi Acceleration will create a second connection to the same SSID and then use that for the duration of the experienced issue. This is usually successful in getting the device to regain connectivity.
    • iOS devices will complain that the connected network does not have Internet access.
    • Miscellaneous IoT devices like smart speakers, smart TVs, Wi-Fi connected streaming boxes, etc. will complain that they have lost Internet connectivity until rebooted or manually re-connected.
  • None of the devices (that I have observed) actually lose their connection to the AP. All remain connected, but lose outbound Internet access.
  • The issue occurs throughout the house, but because we spend more time in the living room than anywhere else, we notice it more often there. However one of the most frequently affected devices is a Google Home speaker in the master bedroom, which has less than 20ft direct line of sight to an AP.
  • On devices I've been able to test it with (both Android and iOS devices), the affected device will be completely unable to ping or otherwise communicate with any other devices on its local SSID/VLAN. For my more secure, internal device networks, I have client-client communication permitted, so I would expect to be able to ping other devices. When the connection is healthy, I am able to. Once these connection issues show up, the device will retain its assigned IP and associated AP connection, but won't even be able to ping its local gateway.
  • I've also noticed that in many cases, the affected device will show in Omada as being connected to its second-nearest AP instead of its closest one. This occurs whether or not I have fast-roaming features enabled.

My network consists of two T1600G Omada switches, an EAP610, and an EAP670. Routing is handled by a Mikrotik RB5009, with Gigabit AT&T fiber. The switches were bought used but the APs were both new as of December 2023. That December, I ran all-new CAT6 wiring throughout my 1700sqft single-story house, with the EAP670 installed in my open-concept living room and my EAP610 installed in the master bedroom at one far end of the house. I only have ~30 wireless devices on the network, so this definitely isn't a congestion issue. However, I do have 4 SSIDs running (issue persists across all of them), with a mixture of 2.4GHz only and 2.4 + 5GHz. Something else that bothers me is that I used to have two Ubiquiti APs in the exact same positions as the new EAPs (new cable though), and I had very similar issues with those.

I have tried several times to identify the least-congested channels and optimize channel widths, but results are the same. I've also tried the WLAN Optimization feature of Omada and haven't experienced anything different. Signal throughout the house is great. When connected, Speedtest.net tests are fine. It's becoming extremely frustrating. Has anyone else experienced similar things?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Ted

Hi  @tedtms

How can you recover the Internet? Do you need to reboot the affected clients? Or will they recover automatically? If so, how long will it need to recover?

When the issue occurs, will all wireless clients be affected? Or there are still same wireless clients working normally?

In the meantime, for faster support, I created a support email for you, and the case ID is TKID250129308.

Please check your email inbox and reply us with the info required.

Wish you a happy life and smooth network usage!

@Vincent-TP Hi Vincent - thanks for the reply. Please see my answers below.

  • Typically, I have to either reboot the device or disconnect and then re-connect it to the Wi-Fi for it to regain Internet access. On a rare occasion, a device may self-recover within a few minutes, but this is uncommon.
  • When the issue occurs, it does not affect all devices at the same time. Usually only one at a time, but most devices experience it multiple times a day.

Thanks for the email. I will provide the same answers there.

Thanks,

Ted

  @tedtms Hi, i have ER706W and EAP255 and I notice same issue when I'm connected to EAP255.

Problem looks solved when I disabled PMF. It was capable before.
