Subject: Assistance Needed: Trunking an Aruba 1930 to a TP-Link TL-SG3428

Hello All,

I’ve been tasked with the challenge of trunking an Aruba 1930 switch to a TP-Link TL-SG3428 switch (not my preferred setup). I’m running into a few issues and could use your expertise.

Current Setup

  • TP-Link TL-SG3428 is connected directly to the Cisco router (Service Provider).
  • Aruba 1930 is connected to the TP-Link via a fiber cable.
  • The Service Provider provides DHCP for VLAN 10 for one service.
  • VLAN 1 (default VLAN) is configured with a custom static IP subnet for another service.

Configuration

  1. Aruba 1930:
    • Configured trunking for VLANs 1 (tagged) and 10 (untagged) on interface 25.
    • Interfaces 1/0/1 - 1/0/10 are assigned to VLAN 10.
    • Interfaces 1/0/20 - 1/0/24 are assigned to VLAN 1.
  2. TP-Link TL-SG3428:
    • VLANs 1 and 10 are set up on interface 1/0/25.
  3. From the Aruba switch:
    • I can ping both gateways on the Cisco router.
    • I can communicate with the TP-Link switch using the custom VLAN 1 subnet.

Issue

When connected to the Aruba switch:

  • Devices on VLAN 10 are unable to obtain a DHCP address from the Service Provider.

When connected directly to the TP-Link switch:

  • Devices on VLAN 10 successfully receive a DHCP address and can access the internet.

Questions

  1. Can the TP-Link TL-SG3428 trunk to the Aruba 1930?
  2. I don’t see an explicit option for trunking on the TP-Link interface—could this be the problem?
  3. Are there any specific settings I’m missing on either the Aruba or TP-Link switch to ensure proper VLAN propagation and DHCP relay for VLAN 10?

Any guidance or suggestions to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi @Kanaloa

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

I think you might need this article to see if static routing is required?

Not sure about your other devices but if they are not VLAN interfaces, you might need the routing.

See the note parts:

How to Set Up VLAN Interface on the Omada Router

1. Not familiar with the Aruba 1930, but if it supports VLAN then it should work. 2. Trunk ports on the SG3428 would have the VLAN "tagged", so the port linking the SG3428 to the Aruba 1930 should have VLAN 10 as a tagged member. Aruba1930 would also need to have VLAN 10 set the same way. From your notes, Aruba 1/0/25 is untagged and SG3428 1/0/25 member type is unclear. I assume port 25 is used on both switches to connect them. 3. Nothing else should be needed when DHCP server/clients are on the same VLAN.

  @D-C

Thank you D-C... I'll make sure that I have both switches tagging the uplink ports for VLAN 10!
