EAP245 Wi-Fi Speed With iPhone 11
Hi
I have an EAP245 v3 and I host inside my network a docker with Librespeed. My speed test never goes over 400 mbits. I'm in front of it with nothing to reduce the strength of the signal. I'm sure that I'm using 5ghz. The channel width is set to auto.
Shouldn't I get more than it at 5ghz ?
if yes, what can I do to make it work ?

Yeah the AC88 is a wifi5 device alright, but its one of the ones that supports 1024QAM which means it will offer wifi6 like speeds (on cards that support it). Seen these type of device before where they are not 100% ratified for wifi6 and therefore sold as wifii5, but performance is much closer to 6
Screenshot below shows speeds similar to wifi6 when running 1024qam. The iphone 11 has a 6ax chipset so can support this, that likely answers the difference in speed that the orgional poster is seeing here. Not that fimilar with Asus products, but this seems a decent home grade device... sadly however the EAP245 is 100% AC spec with no additional QAM tweaks so wont offer anything like the speed he was getting..
In answer to your question, i am typing this on a M1 MACbook Pro with only 2x streams :( However they are AX streams so its connected at over 2gbps which is more than enough for anyone really
M2 got announced yesterday with M1 coming to ipad... may change things a bit **fingers crossed**

Im guessing you are running online speed tests? For the record I find FAST DOT COM to be more accurate than SPEEDTEST DOT NET sorry have to write that like that avoid filter lol
However in answer to your question, it doesnt seem that un-usual if honest! I was once told at a Huawei training course that 40-60% of the 'connection speed' is the expected real range for WiFi. So far that has lived to be true in my experience. I have 3x EAP245s and fast dot com is reading around the 420mbps on a 1gb line (just ran the test a few times), that was on a mobile phone, laptop tad faster at 460mbps
Anyways.. I'm only guessing here but you are likely a 2x2 connection (866mbps) so roughly 50% of that is normal (433mbps), which you are not far off so it seems ok in my experience. You could try moving away from channels 36-48 go into the 52 or 104 something like that and retry?? Channels 36-48 are quite busy in most occasions (neighbours), popping up a few channels may help!
Personally if I drop to channel 36-48 the speed difference is noticeable, say 10-15% due to the air being less clear, not a lot in fairness but noticeable..

Honestly dont think 80mhz is your issue
The iPhone 11 has a 2x card, therefore if you had 2x on a 40mhz width it would top out at 400mbps (2x 200mbps). On WiFi you never get anything close to the connection speed, this is purely theoretical speeds and real transfers will be a lot slower.
With that in mind, you would never get 400mbps on a 2x 40mhz link.. it would be 250 / 300 at best. This alone indicates you are on a 80mhz link..
Try a different channel. What i said earlier, the numbers you are getting are a tad low (50 to 100mbps perhaps) so a channel change might help but dont compare this to cable connections, you will just end up disappointed.

use 80mhz. get link speed to 866mbps which is a normal 5ghz, 2x stream, 80mhz according to the calculation of wireless speed. refer to the internet, this is easy.
iphone never uses more than 2x stream(aka antenna). crap iphone. lol. i thought iphone can use more than 2. but never a model. 12 13, nope. not expecting 14 will get a 3x/4x stream(antenna).
only models for gaming, they have more antennas. but you need to count the antenna on your ap.

That's the thing. In my old ASUS AC88U I could get around 800 or a little more. Now, with EAP245 it won't go over 400 and something.
In both cases I was in front of the AP.

Ah that makes more sense, simple answer is that you are using a different version of wireless
The EAP245 is an AC grade device (wifi5)
The Asus is an AX device (wifi6)
The newer WiFi6 standard is quite a bit faster than wifi5, that will be your difference
You can try moving to a DFS channel (52+) as you should be able to get 500mbps on AC, any faster you will need to look at an EAP6xx series Access Point as these support WiFi6

No, this AC88U is an AC model. These are the specs
WiFi 5 (802.11ac) : up to 1734 Mbps
1024QAM (2.4GHz) : up to 1000 Mbps
1024QAM (5GHz) : up to 2167 Mbps

According to the ASUS site this is an AX grade device.. below is the first line on their website
"The Asus RT-AX88U is the best choice for a higher end router. It features next generation Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) technology, and an impressive eight"
Thinking out loud here but.. Reading the specs it appears to be one of the early AX devices, not officially ratified as AX standard (hence still sold as AC) but does have AX capable hardware. Thats not uncommon for device to do that prior to official releases of the new wifi standard (sometimes these where called AD), if you have had this for a few years its likely the case.
The massive give away is that it saying 1024 QAM.. that is only available on WIFI6.. WiFi5 is 256 QAM and would explain the difference.
WiFi 5 (802.11ac) : up to 1734 Mbps
1024QAM (2.4GHz) : up to 1000 Mbps
1024QAM (5GHz) : up to 2167 Mbps
To test this if you connect to the ASUS and check what your connection speed is, not a speedtest but the "phones connection speed" remembering your iPhone has 2 streams.
WiFI5 (AC) is 433mbps per steam so should connect at 866 mbps
WiFi6 (AX) is 1200mbps per stream so should be 1600+ mbps
Honestly, if you are getting 800mbps+ before on the ASUS it cant be WiFi5, its physically impossible for an 866mbps connection to offer anything close to that speed so some WiFi6 trickery is the only option, or else you have a flaw in your testing.

Naming for asus is simple like TP. AX is WIF6, AC is WIFi5. What the model he said is AC88, which I happened to get AX88u back months ago. I know that is an AC for sure. there is a model AC88 and once in my consideration but i left it because outdated WIFI5. Not worthy a penny. Tho my devices don't get WIFI6, but future's coming.
But you explained right. he cannot get 800mbps for internet but for link speed. Certainly. iphone 11 got 2 stream antennas(like intel never gets the best tech for customers while that tech has been applied by so many other brands. toothpaste). Apple never supports 160MHz even with 13 models. LOL.
PS i once looked up apple specs from their support sites and very disappointed to know that apple still uses 2 stream. and no models get more than 2. (Maybe macbook pro's different?)
