Model: ER7206 (TL-ER7206)
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Dear all,

I am considering replacing my current FTTH router by a TP-Link ER7206. However my ISP requires the device to populate the Option 60 parameter of DHCP requests made by the router to get an Internet (WAN) IP address assigned.

I did not see a way to populate that Option 60 through the web configuration interface. Is there a way to do it via CLI ?

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi all,

Thank you for your continued attention to this request.

We are pleased to confirm that this feature will be included in the V5.15 Omada Controller and the corresponding firmware.

Please note that this will involve an adapted firmware, not just a controller update. Firmware development is a complex process, and timelines may change. Therefore, we cannot provide a specific release date at this time. Please stay tuned to future firmware release notes for updates.

When introducing a feature like this, we typically apply it uniformly across all models to ensure consistency and a seamless user experience.

However, it's essential to acknowledge that hardware limitations may exist, which might prevent us from adding the feature to certain models. In such cases, we cannot provide individual notifications explaining the reason. Please note that we cannot guarantee the fulfillment of all requests, and we must set clear expectations upfront.

I'm afraid that the ER7206 router only supports Option 60 on LAN->DHCP Server, but not Option 60 on the WAN interface.

May I know more about your ISP? What's the model number of the FTTH router?

If necessary, I'd like to forward this as a feature request to the product team for further evaluation.

Daer @Fae,

Thank you very much for your feedback and consideration.

My ISP is Swisscom (I am in Switzerland), and you can find here their support page with the instructions for connecting a router to their FTTH network: https://www.swisscom.ch/en/residential/help/device/internet-router/external-router.html

Notice the sentence: "You need to set the DHCP Option 60 for the WAN interface to 100008,0001 in the router configuration menu. ".

I know other cases with different ISPs in Europe that have similar requirements, for example Orange which is the largest FTTH provider in France. So I believe this is a pretty common requirement and I support you idea of making this a new feature request.

For your info my current router is a Swisscom branded "Internet Box standard", the make is Arcadyan and the model is (I believe) VRV9519.

Thanks again.

Hello @Fae,

These are common DHCP options that required by some ISPs or restricted network environments:
- Option 60(Vendor Class Identifier; dhcp-class-identifier)
- Option 61(Client Identifier; dhcp-client-identifier)
- Option 77(User Class Information; user-class)
- Option 90(Authentication)

Here are some example configurations(which applies to OPNsense):
- https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/sfr_red_fr_ftth.html
- https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/SkyUK.html
(I can't make them clickable because this forum doesn't allow external link)

I already read your replies in other threads:
- https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/229930

But there are more people who need the DHCP options:

VPN routers(like ER7206 and R605) are often used in small branch office with consumer grade internet line in fact.

So in my opinion ER7206 and R605 should be capable to configure major DHCP options at WAN interface. Moreover it's not that difficult to implement, relatively.

Thank you :)

@mtest001

Hello,

i already own an er7206 and I would definitely need this option to get rid of the internet provider box.
The er7206 is great but it's quite sad to see that my old 50€ edgerouter-x from ubiquity offered a lot more configurations option thanks to the CLI. I really hope the firmware will offer more advanced options soon.

Hello all,

Just checking to see if there was any progress on this issue ? I am really eager to replace my existing router with the ER-7206, but this DHCP client configurable option 60 is a blocking point.

As far as I know, there is no plan at the moment. But it has been recorded for further evaluation.

Hello all,

Same here, in France, with SFR / Red-by-SFR providers (same physical network).

The connection to their fiber network requires to provide some option 60 on the DHCP request.

Today I'm relying on my Netgear Orbi RBK50 kit, and it provides good wifi and a stable WAN connection (with option 60).

The main reason why I'm looking at TP-Link today is for the reasonable price of the hardware, cause I just needed to upgrade a former 16 x 1Gbs switch (a several years old TP-Link too, still working like a charm!) to a 24x one with POE support. I'm now thinking of migrating all my network hardware to TP-Link, since I like the unified management system which is Omada (and Ubiquiti Unifi products are more expensive for a quality maybe not better).

I'd love to acquire the ER7206 router for my home network (or any other powerfull upcoming Omada model by the way...), but I basically need this option 60 to work for that. And obviously I'd acquire some EAPs too, to definitely replace my Orbi kit.

(Note: keeping the ISP router is not an option, since the connection it provides is unstable, it makes one more device to be uselessly powered, and for many other reasons too...)

Really looking forward to see that 60 option implemented in DHCP WAN-client on Omada routers !

Please give this functionality a high priority in the dev roadmap :)

Thanks for reading.

Greetings

Hello @Fae

If brand like Ubiquiti or Synology can do it (https://kb.synology.com/en-global/SRM/tutorial/How_do_I_set_up_my_Synology_Router_to_connect_to_the_Internet_using_DHCP), TP-Link should be able to do it too !

I'm very disappointed to see how limited the software can be compared to competitors.

But i'm still hoping for good news in the next few monthes... finger crossed.

Regards,

Matt
