The 1000Mbps light comes on for all connections except for the connection coming from the router which provides internet access. Is that how it should be? Thanks.

It seems to be a negotiation issue between the switch and the router. Ensure the Router is 10/100/1000Mbps auto-negotiation as well.
Try changing a different cable, use standard CAT5e above cable may fix it. And test with different ports for checking.
If you can change the Speed&Duplex of the router port, you could try fixing the router port to 1000MF.
