Hi!

I recently moved to a new house, that is an older house from 1960s. This house has never had any wirings for network, so I have now a great opportunity to build a solid base for networking. I have a 5G modem from the internet operator and my idea was to add router, switch and a controller from TP-Link to this setup. And I did so, I purchased:

  • ER707-M2 for the router
  • SG2218P for the switch
  • OC300 for the hardware controller

I'm not that experienced with these level devices, and I would like to have some help. I tried to search the forums and I have also been googling quite a lot, but I can't find any good starting point for this kind of setup. My assumptions were, that this would work:

  • connect the ethernet cable from the 5G modem to the router's WAN port
  • connect a cable from the router to the switch
  • connect a cable from switch to the controller

I thought, that with this setup the router gets the IP, and then switch gets the connection from the router and can distribute that to any device connected to it (for now, the controller). But this ain't the case, it is just not working. But if I connect my laptop directly to the router, it can obtain an IP address from the router and I can browse the internet. So the connection is working. I don't just get the other parts how to get them working.

Few questions:

1. Very basic for the starters: if I've understood correctly, the hardware controller is there to control everything, right? So it can be used to manage the router and switch?

2. How to start managing the controller, I mean how to access it's web interface? Does it obtain an IP address with my cabling explained above, or how should it be? For example I cannot connect to the Internet with my laptop if the laptop's ethernet cable is connected to the switch. It only works if the cable is connected directly to the router. So I guess the switch is not distributing the router's DHCP to the devices connected to the switch.

I don't know actually how to ask more questions, because I'm so confused right now. Mayeb this is something really simple, but I don't just get it now. I would like to have someone pointing me straighforward instructions, how and what to connect to where and where to start managing. I don't even know the ip addresses of the devices, except the ER707. That is 192.168.0.1 and I can see that website if I connect to router direct.y with my laptop. The first page is to set up an admin account, but I have not yet done that because if the management should be done via controller. I can naturally be fine for some time by just using the router because connecting to it directly my connection is working. But I would like to play with the switch and controller, too.

So my very basic need currently is to:

  • manage stuff using the controller's web interface
  • be able to get ip addresses for all devices connected to switch

I can later setup different VLANs and rules etc, but I would like to get some guidance for this beginning. Thanks a lot for anyone who could help me out :)

UPDATE: I got the system somehow working, by following these steps:

- Factory reset for each of the three devices

- Ethernet cable from 5G modem to router WAN port
- Ethernet cable from router to switch
- Ethernet cable from switch to controller
- Ethernet cable from router to controller
- Ethernet cable from switch to laptop

My initial thought was that it would be enough to connect from router to switch and ONLY from switch to controller. So that controller would see all the devices needed through that single wire. But no, if I remove the cable between router and controller, nothing works. This however causes side-effects, more on that in the questions.

I also changed the switch IP address to be static, because per my understanding the router and switch are having the same IP of 192.168.0.1 and my purpose was to avoid conflict. Now the device IPs are these:

- Router: 192.168.0.1
- Switch: 192.168.0.2 (manually set)
- Controller: 192.168.0.100 (by DHCP from router(?))
- Laptop: 192.168.0.101 (by DHCP from router(?))

Few questions still left:

1. Is that really needed, that BOTH router and switch are connected to controller? Luckily controller has two ports, but still thinking.

2. Something is clearly wrong still, because I have over 1000 alerts within short period related to the cable between router and controller:

3. Why Omada Controller dashboard shows N/A for internet and gateways:

Hi  @spexi

Please browse the following link and have a look on those set up videos:

https://www.omadanetworks.com/us/search/?q=OC300&t=video&p=1&type=smb

As you can see in the videos, we can plug the controller into the switch.

For the alert, it seems like there is some wrong config on the WAN port.

Please kindly be noted that the router's WAN IP must be  in a different subnet from its LAN IP.

To better understand the situation, please send us the following info:

1. A screenshot of the router's WAN info page (Double click the router > Details);

2. A screenshot of the router's LAN info page ( Settings >Wired&Wireless Networks > LAN)

3. The IP address you get when PC is directly connecting to the modem (How to find IP address on your devices

4. The firmware of the OC300 (Click About button on the Top right corner)

@Vincent-TP hey, and thanks for your reply! I'll check the link and the videos after posting this reply. I will add the needed screenshots below.

1. I'll add here two screenshots from the Controller's web interface related to the router details. Here are two images from the details tab, the "Overview" and "2.5G WAN1" sections:

2. I had a menu path Settings -> Wired Networks -> LAN, and there's not that much data or info. But the screenshot is here:

3. My 5G modem on the outdoor wall has only one output port, and that is currently attached to the TP-Link ER707-M2. I don't know if connecting that to my laptop is needed for this question, since it would get the same kind of an IP address as can be seen in the "2.5G WAN1" screenshot above. So currently the IP for the modem is 84.230.32.8 and that kind of an IP I would get also to my laptop if I would attach the ethernet directly to it. I still add here a screenshot of my laptop's "ip addr" command (running Linux):

4. This is the screenshot of my Omada Controller's About window in the web interface:

About this you wrote:

Do you need more information for this? Some other configs / screenshots? I have not done much configurations, only added port forwardings to SSH and Plex Server, because I have PC serving those.

Your controller version is 5.7 do an update on the global view site to 5.14 Your gateway is not listed on the isp load view. Did you set the WAN config with dynamic or static ip? Or is this a pppoe connection?
