Omada mdns ... does it actually work?

Hi There,

I've just switched my network over from unifi and am having issues with mdns (which was working with 0 intervention in unifi). I was under the impression that it had recently been included in Omada.

I can infact see the mDNS options in omada, I have created a rule covering all vlans and yet I cannot seem to discover printers or devices in the iot vlan. As a test I placed one printed in the same vlan as my workstation and another in the iot vlan, windows will pick up the printer in the same vlan but is unable to discover the printer in the iot vlan.

Can someone confirm if mDNS is actually functional in omada yet?

  @Bozellbartlesen, @crembz

Hi, What is the firmware version of your controller?

I saw they released a new Beta version on the forum, take a look:

Omada Software Controller_V5.11.8_Windows Beta

ER605 V2_2.1.3_Build 20230616 Beta Firmware

  @crembz

Did you try the new Beta firmware? They add multiple new features and I'm running them with the mDNS simple config working properly.

  @Virgo I looked into it but I could only find a windows version. I'm running the Linux controller though

  @crembz

Have you experimented with the latest Beta firmware? It introduces several new features, and I've been using it successfully with the mDNS simple config functioning as expected. I'm constantly seeking personal growth while assisting others in the process.

  @jbut Yes I spun it up on my windows machine. It seems to be inconsistent in how it works. Seems my google home devices are fine, however cast groups don't make it across vlans. Also printers are hit and miss ... although I think I have tracked that down to an issue with the omada APs and the printer ... which I didn't have when using unifi APs.

  @crembz I'm having no luck with this. The configuration and paramters seems striaght forward, especially for something like Printers where there is an out of the box Bonjour service group. My defined Google and Chromecast services are also not working. I currently have these defined as Gateway type rules, though previously had them as AP type rules (not really sure what the difference is). What made it work for you?

  @nRayAffair the omada controller has no profile built in for the Google devices. I had to add mine in manually and it not advertises correctly. Also unless I had all networks and all services selected under the mdns service in the controller I could not get it working.

I'm not home now but I'll post my mdns profile
