Model: AP200
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.20.0 Build 20200422 Rel. 70543(4555)

I have just purcheased a EAP225-Outdoor to extend my wifi network coverage externally. I found I was getting good signal coverage outside, however when running a wifi speedtest on my home network I was getting around 20Mbps when I should have been getting around 500Mbps on the 5g wifi. The 2.4g wifi was similarly slow.

I tried installing the latest firmware and doing a factory reset, but no luck in increasing the speed. Also tried different wifi channels, new network cables and a different POE injector. All had no effect.

Just as I was about to give up and return the unit to the retailer, I appear to have found the problem. Turning on Qos with default settings cures the slow speed (previously it was turned off). I have no idea why this would make such a difference but hope this will save someone else much frustration.

Can anyone explain why Qos makes such a difference? There were no other clients logged on to the EAP225 when I ran the tests, so I would not expect Qos to have any effect.

Hi @Hoppo,

Did you disable QoS?  Why?  Wireless QoS/WMM is a requirement of 802.11n and 802.11ac.  The radio will default to much slower speeds when it is turned off.

While I understand your point about only having a single wireless client during testing, wireless QOS is, shall we say, more baked in to the newer Wifi standards than it is for hardwired.

Is your EAP225-OD hardwired or MESH?

Mine is connected wirelessly (MESH).  I typically see ~120-170 Mbit/sec with mine over MESH.  The new SDN firmware, combined with pointing my antennas in a "V" configuration, has improved my MESH speeds 20-40 Mbit/sec or so.

@Hoppo

Saved me a lot of time and frustration! THANK YOU!!!

Despite this finding being reported over a year ago, this must be a "bug" that they should fix with a firmware update. Makes no sense how/why QOS needs to be enabled in order to see proper throughput?!?
