Connecting TL-R600VPN router to uVerse NVG599 gateway

Have been beating my head against the wall for a week now, and at&t is of no help (amazing, eh?).
I have a private network, the gateway being a TL-R600VPN router which, when I was connecting via TimeWarner through a surfboard cable modem, all was good. With the at&t NVG599 Gateway, the gateway can see the router, but the router can no see the gateway.
Has anyone been successful in configuring internet connectivity to a private network?
