New features - question
Hi,
I just wanted to make sure I follow official way of working of Omada/TP-Link here :)
There was an info in release notes of Controller's fw v.5.15.XX that some new features like SD-WAN or FQDN for WireGuard will be implemetned.
But in order to use those we still ned to wait for each router to have their fw upgrade so it will support those features of controller?
So even if my controller is updated to the newet fw version which supports additinal features, as long as TP-Link do not provide a fw update for my ER605 / ER706W / ER707-M2 those features won't work for me?
I'm not sure if I got some of the info on the forum properly so I decided to ask.
Sorry if my question is stupid... I just want to know that :)

Correct - for new features they must be supported both in controller AND on the devices themselves.
It is important to remember the controller doesnt actually do anything - it just sends configuration data to routers, switches and access points, and recieves control data and stats back (so you get the fancy dashboards etc). The only things the controller really does directly is adoption, configuration, statistics and firmware updating.
Firmwares will come, it takes them a while. From being here for several years now, the general pattern is the higher end routers get the firmware first, and once they prove to be stable, it trickles down to the other models over a few months
I guess with the 5.15 adaptations and new features it might take longer, they have been adding a LOT and there have been a few mis-steps along the way but its all getting there now.

Please be advised that while the firmware of our device may support certain features, these features will not be operational in controller mode unless the corresponding controller has been updated to match the firmware's capabilities. It is essential to understand that updating the device's firmware alone is insufficient; a compatible update to the controller is also required for full functionality in controller mode.
About the controller thing, you asked GRL if he/she is certain or not. The controller maintains the time, sends and syncs config to the devices, and in rare cases, if you use RADIUS built into the controller, then the controller would play an important role in authentication. In other times, it does not matter much. Main function is to give all-in-one and easy access to manage.

But are you sure about the part below?

I have doubts cuz last time my NAS went offline after power outage and didn't start up automatically when the power was bac, I wanted to connect via VPN to my network and just WOL it... But the VPN server didn't work even, tho, it is (in theory) supported by router.
After I manually turned on my NAS, which also hosts the controller sw, then the VPN started to work and I could connect without any issues...
So that suggests me, the controller does more than just send config or gather logs. :)

The controller plays no active part in network control once devices are adopted and configured, unless you change a configuration, which the controler then applies to the necessary devices.
You can physically unplug a controller, and the network will happily run, as configured, without issue. Even after a power outage everything will come back up in its previously configured state.
You are free to have doubts about that, but that is how it works.

You are right. Just tested that again. I had a config error in OVPN file in one of the devices I've tried to use back then. I just fixed that, stopped the container and the VPN works. Sorry for confusion.
I guess my question has been answered then. Now I need to wait for official fw updates for my routers.
