Model: OC200
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: Latest

Like I have lived with my OC200 for years, it's been a workhorse but I am in a bind.  I run the OC200 because if the servers down etc if always gives you a hardware into the network.

It's too slow, you litterily cannot use ANY of the filtering features because the controller will bog down.  So what to do?  I could virtualise it in a docker/linux image, again server off no go.......  I thought well maybe like a Rasperby Pi is a go etc........  not a fan of not a complete package.

I just don't understand.  TPLink was catching upto Ubiquity and now I feel they are falling behind hardware wise again.

All I want is an upgraded OC200 in the same size unit.  Seriously it's a dual core with 512MB RAM.  We can buy smaller devices from AliExpress with 8 cores, 4-16GB RAM with M2 slots.

Why won't TP Link upgrade the OC200, doesn't fit the cloud profile plan? ......

Omada could be a powerhouse in my home it's held back by this one thing, we have many sites at work rolled out with a virtualised online controller but for me personally........ like .........  any filtering will cut my gigabit speed from like 960mbits / sec to like 200-400........  it will bog, there will be latency in online gaming etc.

Like you can get Cloud Gateway Max and Ultras now from Ubiquity at good pricing.......  which do IDS processing properly at speed.

I have litterily spent tonight looking at my options with the OC200, I dont want a OC300 or OC400 as they are too big. It's a controller I want it in a small form the same size.

It annoys me.  That little box could be quad to eight core with like 4-8gb of ram atleast.......  It's just a matter of changing two chips........  so why won't TPLink do that?

The OC220 is on its way to a store near you soon :-)

https://www.omadanetworks.com/en/business-networking/omada-controller-hardware/oc220/

Omada controller also runs very well on a Raspberry pi with 4 gb ram, if you have a Raspberry pi5 then the controller is extremely fast, I don't use docker but have installed omada directly on the rasperry pi OS, I thought it was better than docker. easier and upgradeable too. then you can also run unifi and omada controller on the same device if you have any unifi equipment. so I would have gone for a pi rather than an OC2x0 device.

  @MR.S

Intersting

Ive been bugging my manager to let me buy an OC300 as im getting irritated by my Oc200 performance - but i dont really have space left in my rack for the bigger unit and i was considering putting it in a satellite rack ina nother room - but then it cant be directly connected to the gateway which is my preference in case a switch goes....wonko (twice...i have created a switch ACL that blocks management vlan from itself which is of course, a nightmare)

Shame there is no datasheet for OC220 yet, does have gig ports though...and it has the same capacity for omada devices.  Possibly a chipset / storage refresh more than anything.

to be clear - the controllers arent doing any of the filtering - they just instruct your router to do so, and its all done on-router

Most of the routers dont have the "oomph" for full speed DPI / IPS-IDS and the throughput will drop.  This isnt because of the controller itself.

The only router they have so far that can do ultra fast filtering functions is the ER8411 - and there is a new version of this coming soon to, i dont remember the model name.

@GRL Really it doesn't do it on the controller?  I could of sworn on of the TPLink guys said it did........ guess I must be wrong.  So really none of their hardware is capable then realistically.......

We are already on gigabit internet speed wise and about to head towards 2.5 gigabit in like 5-12 months time here in Australia when the new NTD's start getting rolled out and TP Link can barely do 500Mbps with IDS/IPS and Application Monitoring etc.

Thats a real shame, so I have a ER707-M2 which I thought was pretty beefy but maybe not.

Regardless of brand you will find the same issue - most stuff in the cheaper end of things (and by that i mean anything absolutely not top-end) will not do full speed throughput with any kind of filtering enabled.

Saturday

@MrHC1983 I watched the TP Link Roadmap, had to look for the OC220.  Basically a Quad Core hopefully with like 4-8GB of RAM but most likely will only have 1-2GB.

It said Q1 2025.  Where can I buy one?  It will solve my issue if it's atleast double the power.
