I do use the same version 5.15.20.18. And I do run the same setup as described above, https termination on traefik reverse proxy which manages my certificates to keep them up-to-date and safe, forwarding to controller over http in local network. I think for this the current option to disable HTTPs in system settings is perfect, and please feel free to slap a huge warning banner over it that describes the downsides of doing so for the general use case of running without proxy.

I have downgraded to omadacontroller 5.15.8.2 for the moment but otherwise would plan to stay at the latest version. I run this via docker on a linux amd64 pc. I combine this with a nginx docker container for reverse proxying/ssl termination. Thank you!
