Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.2.6 Build 20240718

Hello,

I’ve been encountering an issue with my TP-Link ER605 router in my Omada network setup. Over the last two Friday nights, the internet connection at my site went down completely. After investigating, I noticed that the router's CPU usage spikes to 100% before the issue occurs. The router then freezes, and all devices in the network lose internet access. I also occasionally see "heartbeat miss" notifications, though they seem to occur before the CPU spike. Rebooting the router temporarily restores the internet connection, but the issue happens again the following Friday.

Details:

  • Router: TP-Link ER605
  • Setup: Omada network
  • Problem: For the last two Friday nights, the internet has gone down completely. The CPU usage spikes to 100% before the router freezes, causing a loss of internet access. After the issue, I see the disconnection, and rebooting restores the internet. Occasionally, I also see "heartbeat miss" notifications. The problem reoccurs every Friday night.
  • Troubleshooting attempts: I’ve rebooted the router and checked for any firmware updates. The problem happens even when there are no significant changes in network usage (such as heavy traffic or large downloads). The router is running the latest firmware version.

Question:

Has anyone encountered similar issues with the ER605, particularly with CPU usage spiking to 100% and causing disconnections and heartbeat misses? What could be causing the CPU usage to hit 100% on Fridays, and how can I prevent this from happening? Any advice on how to fix this issue or specific settings to check would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi @bamateknoloji

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

There was a similar report on ER605 as far as I recall. 2025 Q1.

But there are not that many. Looks like a rare situation where it surges.

I asked the previous user who experienced this to monitor carefully and report if it happens again.

Some details I'd like to know:

1. What kind of controller and version do you use? Is it a beta firmware?

2. Network diagram and with IP specified.

In addition, you should examine if there is any loop.

3. What configs do you have? Except for the regular network connection. ACL, VPN, port forwarding, or bandwidth limit? Anything?

1. I use Omada Software Controller running on a Ubuntu virtual machine through Docker. Version is 5.15.8.2

2. Diagram is here:

ı don't know what loop means here. Can you explain it more? I don't think there is a misconfiguration since this config did not change for a long time and was working without any problem.

3. There are some DHCP reservations.

There are a couple of port forwardings, standard thing from WAN to internal IPs.

No bandwidth limit.

OpenVPN is enabled but not used regularly.

Thanks again

Docker is not under our support. We do not officially support Docker. I cannot tell if it is a Docker issue where it is a sync config or graph error. Docker seems to need a second compile. I cannot determine if it is a controller issue.

Based on the map, it does not show a duplicated IP. I assume there is no IP conflict. This is your job to check.

Loop means the connection is duplicated. If you run a cable, you connect both ends to the router or switch, or anything similar to this connection, it would cause a loop. Retransmission will happen and the network will become slow and gradually it stops due to the loop. CPU of the router and the PC would surge.

Do you have any new devices added to the network recently?

  @Clive_A

There is no recent change to the Software Controller or no recent device. There is no loop either. IP's are all right and the network is running without problems most of the time.

It was last weekend and the weekend before, when there are really very low use  in the network (no person is working weekends) it became like this.

First, I noticed timeouts in my servers. It was up and down for some time. And after 20-30 ups and downs, it went completely.

When I checked the controller, the ER605 showd not connected. After power off/on the device, everything was back to normal.

Hi  @Clive_A it is happening again now.

Since I am working remote I no longer have a connection to the site. I will ask my colleagues to to reset the ER605 and everything will start working normally i hope. Can you plase share the exact steps to prepare a backup and export the device as you requested? I don't want to make a mistake and miss this opportunity.

Backup steps can be found in the User Guide. Please refer to the User Guide. It is not hard and it's a simple click in the maintenance.

Send your backup, and your controller version, your firmware version, and details about them.

Provide the timestamp when it happened and the log during that time.

And provide the Device Info exported. Make sure the router is adopted.

Mail template.

Hi  @Clive_A ,

It did not happen last week. Although it was like happening after a couple of times internet going back and forth, it reutned to normal. But it did happen this friday.

I sent a mail regarding the issue with the backup. I hope you will help me understand and help with this issue.
