Model: ER706W
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2 Build 20240726 Rel.77184(4555)

I have no idea what I'm doing but giving it a go:  I have run through the OpenVPN setup page:

I have tried a virtual server:

I tried a port triggering:

I downloaded the OpenVPN config file installed OpenVPN client on my macbook, connected to my mobile hotspot to test and it fails to connect.

So I tried to see if the port is open:

from mac terminal: nc -zvu <my static ip address at home> 1194

I got a successful connection.

It seems the port is there but I can't connect.  I'm probably missing something simple but having no experience with this am shooting in the dark.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi @beakernz

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

Try this guide:

VPN Connectivity and Access Troubleshooting Guide

I feel that this is a problem with the double NAT. Though you have port-forwarded it, try to remove it.

Oh, also I get this result on my local network:

Connection to 192.168.0.1 port 1194 [udp/openvpn] succeeded!

Modem I mean, bridge mode. Currently, it is a layer of NAT.

I would like to know what your WAN IP is like on the ER706W and your modem-router. If it is a public IP, you can partially mosaic it.

Port forward should be done on the modem-router. Not the ER706W itself.

Screenshot of your WAN on the system status page of the router and mosaic for the last two segments. And result for each step in the troubleshooting guide.

Issue 1: Unable to Connect to the VPN Server.

1. IP address design and conflicts

It is always wise to check if you have configured your VPN server properly if you export the VPN file from your built VPN server.

Misconfiguring the subnet or the VPN interface IP could cause a VPN connection problem.

If your VPN server is a dynamic IP with DDNS or a domain name, please make sure that your DNS server is reachable from your router WAN interface. This matters because the VPN server domain needs to be resolved before a connection is established.

Also, avoid any overlapped IP addresses or subnets in any of the networks you are connecting or creating.

2. Make sure your time is correct.

As it can cause the TLS connection failure. The accuracy of the time on your local machine is crucial for various types of network connections, including VPN, which rely on bidirectional handshakes. Please verify that your time settings are correctly synced.

3. Consider temporarily disabling firewall and security software.

To troubleshoot connectivity issues, try closing any firewall or security software that may be blocking the VPN connection. Remember to re-enable these features once the VPN connection is successfully established.

If you are in a business environment where your company may have activity recording and anti-virus software, you may not be able to establish the connection due to them. Please contact your IT department before you make any outbound encrypted connection.

(We are not responsible for any unauthorized use in terms of the VPN establishment. )

4. Make sure you are not censored by your country when the VPN server resides in another country.

not a problem

5. Compatibility.

router firmware was updated and latest version of openvpn client

6. Always take a second check on your VPN configurations.

this is possible but i can't doublecheck what i don't know may or m ay not be correct in the first place

Issue 2: Connected to the VPN Server but Lacking Internet or Local Access

1. ACL check.

i don't think i have any blocks, the router firewall options are all default settings

2. Ping the remote VPN server Default Gateway

maybe i can pass you my external ip to test?

3. Disable the Firewall and anti-virus if you are using a computer.

i don't seem to connect to the router vpn server itself, so not sure if this applies?

4. Configuration check.

no proxy

5. Packet block due to ISP.

doesn't seem a problem yet anyways until i can connect to the vpn
