OpenVPN profile disappeared - but still somewhere (port in use error)
OpenVPN profile disappeared - but still somewhere (port in use error)
hi all,
I've just realised, that OpenVPN server entry disappeared from my site:
but the settings are apparently stored somewhere and are hidden, because when I try to re-create the OpenVPN server, I get following error message while saving:
how to fix this? Controller is software one running on Windows, version 5.15.8.2.
restarting router nor controller doesn't help....

Seems to be the Controller glitches out.
Did you upgrade the Controller recently?
I think the tunnel and the server are still up and that's why it tells you that you have this error because it works behind the scenes. Might try with the Controller team. Or upgrade to the beta/PR version on the Controller page.
Or try to adopt again? Or reboot the controller.
I think it could be the controller config corrupts or the GUI bugs out.

hi @Clive_A ,
controller was stopped and started (is the software one) and the router was rebooted. none of this helps
no, no Controller upgrade was not performed in the recent time. btw: I still experience the WiFi outage when controller is down.........

Don't mix things in one thread.
As far as I know, this could be a corruption in the config.
If you need to further debug, a remote session might be needed.
My guess now is that you reset the router and adopt it again, to see if this error persists. If it does, possibly, it means a config corruption on the controller.
Then export the config and test the controller config on a new site, if this persists, it seems that the controller needs to be fixed.

Hi @Clive_A,
just upgraded the controller to the version 5.15.20.11 - no change....
VPN Server definition is away, VPN Users seems to be orphaned - but still cannot create "new" VPN server definition because "service port already in use" error.....
will now try to reset and re-adopt the router.
btw: VPN server config on my other site is unaffected (I have 1 controller, two routers on two sites, affected is the primary site)

Yes. It just visually disappeared. Something like this happened before as I recall. That was not fixed as the user did not follow up.
We were halfway through the troubleshooting. Cannot decide what is wrong on what device so far.

Hi @Clive_A,
I did re-provisioning via "Force Provision" in Device/Config/Manage Device and the result is:
- VPN Server is NOT back
- but I can create new one
- what of course means:
- I have edit all VPN users and reassign the VPN server to them
- I have to delete and create new connection on every client device (because new certificates)............
- what of course means:
conclusion: something happened definitely on Controller side and the VPN Server entry disappeared, but on router side was still active - router and controller were out of sync....
btw: as you asked, if I've upgraded the controller recently: negative, but I have adopted three new switches on Friday - replacing the old 3xSG108E and one Netgear switches with 1xSG2218 and 2xSG2008 ones
so, the one million $ question is: how could the VPN server disappeared from controller?

Unknown. I think this requires debugging over the controller.
Like I wrote earlier, if you copy this config to another site and adopt the same router, it still disappears but the VPN is still working, that could really be the controller bugs out.

Go and send an email to the support team.
And let me know the ticket ID so I can follow it up.
I need the device info file in the email.
Since the beginning of 2025, we no longer creates the email ticket for the user. To assist and figure it out efficiently, we recommend submitting a support ticket via email.
Please include:
1. Your Forum ID;
2. Your community nickname;
3. A detailed description of the issue and result if I have suggested anything on the thread, and the troubleshooting steps you've taken in the subject line or body of your email.
