Firmware Version: 1.20.0 Build 20231011 Rel.42220

Hi, guys.

Hardware:

All TP-link gear.

Router ER7412-M2 v1.0, factory reset, no VLANs. 1.0.1 Build 20240719 Rel.56423 - the newest.

Switch has newest firmware, fiber switch.

Router and switch connected by the 2.5G port.

The switch sends via SFP adapter #1 by a long, LC, single-mode fiber-cable to another building, to SFP adapter #2 10G TP-link single-mode SFP adapter (Omada 10GBase-LR SFP+ LC Transceiver, Model SM5110-LR(UN). ) into a 10G Multi-Gigabit SFP Media Converter (MC420L)

Problem

I can't get my switch to signal green for 10G connection, with only 10G gear connected.

It will signal ORANGE, however, when the fibre switch has a 1000Mps SFP installed. Even if 10G gear is still connected to clients.

When the SFP adapter #1 is the same as adapter #2 (both SM5110-LR) - no lights on the switch, and no internet connection.

When the SFP adapter #1 is SM311LS 1000Base-LX SMF Mini-GBiC Module - the switch lights up orange, there is internet connection, and OC200 Omada Controller says the speed is 1000 Mps

When both SFP adapters are SM311LS - it also works.

In the Omada Controller GUI -

Under ports/profile overrides, I have: Switching, 802.1x Auto, Link Speed Manual, and 10Gps/Full Duplex chosen.

When all gear connected is 10G supporting equipment, how come there is no internet connection, only when the switch has inserted 1000Mps SFPs?

I am killing myself with this. This is my 3rd batch of SFPs. I have upgraded Firmware, only to get stuck during update and having to manually fix it. I have had to reset switch by serial. And everything seems back to normal after having pulled all my hair out, except the switch doesn't provide 10G. Which was the entire point in buying 10G equipment, SFP adapters, MCL 420 etc.

If you know anything, I'd most appreciate help.

Hi @Winterwhite

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

? I don't understand the question.

If you have an ER7412-M2 which is 2.5Gbp, that can only get you 2.5Gb.

It would not link a 10G fiber switch in this context. Of course, it falls back to 1Gbps.

And this switch only supports either 1 or 10G.

Note that forcing the port to 10G while the other port does not support 10, that'll cause a disconnection.

@Clive_A so, if I understand you correctly, even though the fiber switch and the individual components can transmit at 10G, they will not transmit at 2,5G, if the fiber switch is linked by a 2,5G connection. It has to be linked to a connection it can see supports the maximum 10G?

Basically correct.

2.5G and 5G are separate standalone protocols.

1G 2.5 5G 10G are all individual protocols.

The switch chipset only supports 1G and 10G which means 2.5 and 5 are not available. In another sense, it does not work on 2.5G as it does not support it. Even if you have a device that works at 2.5, it will fall back to 1G as the other end does not work at 2.5.

Hi @Winterwhite,

Some alternatives to get above 1GB...

  1. Add another 10G copper switch (ex. DS105X) between the MC420L and ER7412-M2.  The switch would negotiate the 10G and 2.5G connections independently.
  2. Replace the media converter with a switch (ex. SG3210X-M2) that supports SFP+ 10G uplink and has 2.5G or better down links.  Again the switch negotiates the connection speeds indepently and as a bonus, functions as a media converter.
