@Kimberley_j87, everything appears to be connected correctly and should work.  It's always possible that the switch is not working properly, but in my experience if it powers on, it works.  You could exchange it and try a different one.  The other possibility is a router configuration issue, but even that seems unlikely if you were using the TV and laptop when the router was enhancing the decor of your lounge.  Maybe try posting the question in a D-Link forum to see if anyone is aware of a router setting that prevents you from adding a switch.

  @Clive_A the Tv and computer lines are separate but we only have one Ethernet port. We bought the switch so we can use both hardwired at the same time.

  @D-C solution was a net gear switch. Worked perfectly as soon as I plugged it in.

@Kimberley_j87, the other one should have worked that easily too. I'll assume it was defective. Glad all is well now.
