ER605 PPPoE with VLAN - "connected" but "offline" - no internet
Hello,
I'm having trouble with a new FTTH connection via PPPoE. Niether I nor the provider can work out why this is happening.
The PPPoE connection can be established and a public IP is provided. However, there is no internet connection and Omada detects that connection as "Offline". We have since received a test router from the provider and the connection is working fine. The odd thing is, when connecting the provided router to the ER605 WAN and connecting with DHCP, the "offline" status remains.
We have been using PPPoE on the ER605 for 2 years with another provider without issues. The only difference with this connection is that it requires a VLAN of 911 (the other provider did not use VLANs).
Am I missing something here? Is the VLAN causing issues somewhere with routing between the ER605 and my switch?

Hi @Sam_CS
Thanks for posting in our business forum.
The only step to enable VLAN is to set 911 on the WAN that your picture has reflected.
No extra steps are required.
You might want to double-check your connection type and VLAN ID based on your ISP suggestions.

Hi Clive,
Thanks for your response. We have triple checked that the PPPoE connection settings are correct, and the provider has also viewed our Omada controller on Teamviewer and cannot see any issues. The VLAN of 911 with the 802.1Q tag enabled is correct (we have also tried without the VLAN, but it does not authenticate - "PPPoE XXX@XXX failed to connect to the server because sending PADI times out.")
We are at a complete loss as to what to do here - the provider has supplied a router and we have confirmed that the connection is up and running as expected. But as soon as it's fed into the ER605, no internet connection can be established with devices connected to the ER605 (even when just connecting their router to the ER605 WAN via DHCP).
It makes no sense to us! Frustrating as BT Openreach FTTP (without VLAN needed) was working fine for 2 years.

PADI timeout is an issue with the PADI server with your ISP.
I would assume that your ISP support agent does not anything about this.
You might need a field agent to change something on their server end.
It was working fine for 2 years but it does not now. They must change something on their end. That's the reason.

I'm not sure exactly how the 'online detection' works on the ER605 but I suspect it pings the ISP gateway and/or sends a DNS lookup to the ISP DNS servers. Its distinctly possible that your new ISPs DNS servers or gateway do not respond to a ping whereas the previous ones did. You could try configuring the Online detection manually and specify a server that does respond to ping.
TBH unless you have multiple WAN connections and are using failover/backup , then its probably simplest just to disable Online detection

Thanks Clive. The PADI error only shows if I remove the VLAN and 802.1Q tag. PPPoE was working with the previous supplier, not the new one. The previous supplier did not need VLAN.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am putting too much emphasis on the 'online detection' - I am simply using it as an indicator for an internet connection.
The real issue is that with the new PPPoE connection as the only WAN, there is no internet at all.
I have manually set the online detection to use 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 with no change.

From what I can see, you are getting a successful PPPoE connection ( with the VLAN ID set ). Try disabling the online detection ( set to always online ), does that give an internet connection ?
