This is a suggestion on ways to make NAT/Port Forwarding usable, or at least not so frustrating that it has made me give up on using the routers for anything other than a basic home network with no port forwarding.

In no particular order:

  • Creating a port forwarding rule you can only create from new, no option to copy (which becomes more of an oissue due to some of the other points)
  • You have to use different names for every rule, which again in itself isn't an issue but because of other issues you have to duplicate rules.
  • You cannot select a number of ports to use in the rule, so you need to create mutiple rules for every service that uses multiple non consecutive ports.
  • Ordering of rules - no idea what order rules are applied in and the list just defaults to alphabetical order.
  • Need to specify destination ports which is another uneccesary step when you are gaving to create loads of duplicate rules. Most routers just default to sending to the source port of no dest is specified.

Being able to import rules (similar to DHCP reservations) would eliminate a couple of the issues.
