Intermittent Connectivity and Latency Issues with Omada Network Setup
Hello everyone,
I’m facing a challenging issue with a customer setup using TP-Link Omada products and hoping for some insights.
Setup Details:
- Controller: OC200
- Router: ER605
- Access Point: EAP650
Problem Description: This setup usually works flawlessly with other clients, providing stable connectivity and internet access. However, with this specific SMB client, while most functions like internal network connectivity, scanner SMB function, and PC to MFP printing work well, we encounter intermittent connectivity issues with specific services:
- Internet Latency: Certain websites experience latency during login, navigation, or when executing functions.
- Local Applications: A medical billing software experiences extreme latency particularly when running reports or batches.
Additional Information:
- The issues only arise when devices are connected via the Omada AP’s WiFi. Connecting directly to the Comcast router’s SSID, bypassing the Omada setup, resolves these issues.
- There are no special firewall settings, ACLs, or complex network configurations involved. The network uses a basic 10.X.X.X/24 setup.
Troubleshooting Done:
- Standard restarts and checks for interference have been performed.
- Firmware versions are up to date
Has anyone experienced similar issues or have any suggestions on what might be causing this problem? Could it be something specific with the router or AP handling of traffic?

What's the firmware of your stuff? Make sure they are up-to-date.
Diagram of your network with subnet and gateway marked. Including your modem-WIFI-router(seems it is)?
What's your DNS server? Latency, that's an overall issue for all wired/wireless clients?
Ping from your problematic clients to the DNS servers, what's the avg milliseconds?
What's your local app? What language does it use? What type is that? Do you experience a problem with the wired devices? It could be a performance throttle. But need more information about it.
It could also be a problem with the computers you've used. Operating system issues. I met something similar on Windows when it is scanning the local drives(SMB). It just lags not literally a problem with the network. Windows problem. It actually works behind the scenes but on the surface, it looks like it is stuck. Normal.

What's your DNS server? 1.1.1.1 , 8.8.8.8
Latency, that's an overall issue for all wired/wireless clients? Overall
Ping from your problematic clients to the DNS servers, what's the avg milliseconds? Ping to DNS are good, 12ms-18ms
What's your local app? no on-prem application other than SMB from Scanner to Local PC, web based app is the issue, website called Trizetto and Locally installed application called ADS (Advanced Data Systems, medical billing software) which needs online connectivity to cloud server front end and database backend.
What language does it use? No sure the language of the apps
What type is that? Dont know what you mean here
Do you experience a problem with the wired devices? Same
It could be a performance throttle. But need more information about it. - The issue persists only when the client is connected to the SSID being broadcast by the EAP650, which flows through the Omada network. But when the client is connected directly to the Comcast Routers SSID the issue does not persist.
I do not believe it to be an OS issue because it works fine without the traffic traversing the Omada setup.
Maybe it has to do something with how secure traffic or encryption inspction flowing through the Omada? Or could there be a possibility of bad hardware or ASIC's within the ER605 or the EAP?

If you don't experience a problem with the DNS, then this is not a problem with the router at least.
It clearly indicates that the client from LAN can travel through the NAT to the DNS server without high latency. Latency resides in the local networks.
Locally, access to the web-based app is problematic. I think it might not be possible for us to resolve it.
It might be the language not efficient enough to handle multithreads. Or the server is not powerful enough to handle the multithread connections.
Do you experience any other problems?
How many clients do you have concurrently connecting to the local server?
What's the bandwidth you tend to use when uploading the reports to the local server?
Your diagram does not show where your server is. And you say you can access it from the Comcast subnet. Do you port forward it?
You probably wanna try to limit the bandwidth of each client or session. It looks like hitting a throttle.
