Model: EAP215-Bridge KIT
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

When setting up the devices, the setup on both devices asks to setup a SSID. It even insists you connect to it wirelessly to continue the setup.

But I just want one device to connect to the other, to extend my wired ethernet to another building. I don't want any clients to connect to it. In that case, do I need to configure SSIDs. I can skip the SSID step at setup. However that doesn't mean that no SSIDs are configured, a SSID based on the device's mac address is created,  even worse these are open networks without authentication or encryption.

You can however delete them later on. But I do get frequent and long disconnects at my POC setup. Is this because the devices need the SSID's to connect to each other. Or is it just because the quality of the devices is substandard?

I would like to try different settings (channels, mode AC only instead of A/N/AC auto), but everyting I change results in long disconnects. Sometime after waiting for 10 minutes ore more they reconnect, but at other times, connection can only be restored by resetting both devices by pressing their reset button. Then one has to repeat the whole setup of both devices again. Only to be disconnected again if you just change one settting.

Why aren't things properly explained in the documentation? Why offer bells and whistles, like clients being able to connect, when even the simple use case of extening wired ethernet can't even be accomplished?

Just create a brigde to which you can connect wired ethernet, that uses AC only (why bother with A and N), and just works. If you want customers to tweak settings, make sure they actually do something useful other than to break the connection.

Hardware looks well built, but firmware/software/UI and documentation are a shambles.

We've tested locally and found that disconnecting the default SSID would cause two APs to lose contact for one to two minutes. You can skip the SSID settings and remove the default SSID if you don't want SSIDs. The lengthy disconnection period could be caused by the DFS channel because it disconnects for roughly ten minutes. Brief introduction of DFS function
It is not recommended to constantly adjust its settings while it is operating, as this will modify the wireless setup and impact the wireless interface.

Re:EAP215-Bridge Kit: Do I really need to set SSID's

  @Hank21

Hi Hank, I'm trying to find information on similar ideas/issues. I just installed the EAP215 bridge kit controlled by an OC300. About 300m (984ft) away from each other. Signal: -56dBm. Clear line of sight. This link is for connecting 6 CCTV cameras, 1 intercom, a solar power inverter and opening a door/gate.

My questions:
1. Enabling WIFI (WiFi for wireless clients like phones) (could provide internet access via a private road, not needed/required because we have a great 5G/4G-LTE network as well, but why not?)
1.1 Will it degrade the connection/link between the bridge kit devices?
1.2 Will power consumption increase when enabling Wifi? (One side of the bridge is powered by batteries and solar)

2. If I decide that I want clients to connect to the bridge via WIFI... Should I turn on Wifi on both devices or just one? Why would I choose one over the other?
2.1 Will it broadcast a wifi signal in a straight line in the direction the AP is facing/pointing and theoretically up to 5km (3.1mi), way outside our property (considering the distance between the bridge devices is about 300m (984ft)). I guess this won't be ideal as anyone could connect to or hack our network infrastructure from very far away.

3. I have also installed some APs (EAP772), (they are not in the signal path but at a fair distance from the nearest one which is 13m (42.6ft) away)
3.1. Will the EAP215 bridge work well with the EAP772 wireless network? That is, will roaming work fine as if the EAP215 were another EAP772?

Thanks

AP
