Model: EAP225-Wall
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: latest

Hey all!

I have a weird issue with an EAP225-Wall that was installed in a home. It's a full omada system besides the ISP router/gateway and has worked well for over two years.

Last week they notified me they had no WiFi in the cellar, where the faulting AP was installed. This is the behavior:

  • full WiFi signal but abysmall throughput (usually close to zero with tiny spikes in the kbit range, if at all)
  • when you connect to one of the ports on the AP itself you do have full throughput
  • the problem follows the AP, all cables are fine
  • used different ports on the PoE switch that powers the AP as well
  • I did a reset from the Omada controller and re-adopted, did a reset on the AP itself as well, but the problem remains.

Broken AP right? Well here's the kicker: if the AP is configured without the Omada controller, stand-alone, it functions fine. I'm baffled as to why that would work, but it does.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm missing here?

Thanks for your time!

Johan

This problem only happens when the devices are managed by the controller, hence it is caused by the controller's settings. Do you configure any VLANs for the wireless network? You might try creating a new SSID with simple setup and see if it works. Please check the port that connects the unit. Have you configured anything to this port on the controller? Normally, when connected to the omada switch, the port profile should be "all".

I went and did some additional testing and in my opinion the issue only got weirder:

- Swapped both EAP225 WALL. Problem remaind at the location, so it's not related to the device or its provisioning

- Checked switch port profiles: they're all set to "All"

- Changed port for the affected location with an AP that's working fine: problem remains the same, at the same location

- Forgot switch, re-adopted, checked all settings: problem remains

- Double checked cable: cable is fine; speed when connected to the ethernet ports of the AP at problem location remains great

- Disconnected an AP from the switch to rule out power-problems (load too high with 5 AP's?): problem remains

- Connected AP from problem location to the switch using a fresh very short cable (1m) that is known good: problem remains (this doesn't make sense, does it?)

It's like the controller had issues with a 5th AP? I think we can assume by testing:

- it's not the AP

- it's not the cable

- it's not the switch port

- it's not the switch

Other remarks:

- only internet access is problematic when connected to WiFi of the problem AP, navigating the controller works ok (maybe because bandwidth requirement is low)

- internet access works but is extremely slow when connected to WiFi from the problem AP

I'm not sure what else to do now. Reset the Omada controller and start from scratch?

Can you share your network topology? How do you connect them? Have you added any VLANs to the SSID? I believe this still corresponds to the settings. Please run additional tests. If you are still experiencing this problem, I will create a case for you to look over your settings, and please specify the problem location and AP.

  @Hank21

This is a flat network, no VLANs. All Omada gear has a dhcp reservation in the ISP gateway router. It has also worked fine without any changes to the setup for the last 2 years.

There's only one WiFi network, no guest networks or client isolation. Everything is linked up using CAT6 cable, full copper.

What I was thinking of doing:

- configure the 5th AP as a stand-alone, not connected to Omada, using the same SSID and password. This should confirm it's Omada/config related.

- completely reset the Omada controller and start from scratch

I'll report back with my finding. Thank you for your assistance.
