ER707-M2: Questions about capability

Model: ER707-M2
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 5.9

I've been a TP link guy for a while since we had them installed at work, and I've been very happy with the interface, and the simplicity.

I've purchased the ER707-M2 (I haven't received it yet) and there's a surprising lack of information about it beyond the normal spec sheet.

The two things in trying to figure out:

1: The specs say it has an embedded controller, but when I read the manual it seems to suggest you either have a hardware controller already or you need to download the software. I have a VM environment so running the software in a container/docker isn't a big deal, but I thought the whole 3-in-1 thing meant there was an integrated controller. It says as much right on the box and in the advertising, but the install guide seems to suggest otherwise.

2: With link aggregation: I have a 3gbps home internet connection. I know there's the 2.5 Wan ports and the 1gb ports, but I'm wondering: can I aggregate a 2.5 AND a 1gb connection to get a full 3gbps?

I'm trying to hunt down the user manual (not the installation guide) because I suspect the answers I'm looking for are there however I can't seem to track it down either.

Any help at all would be appreciated!

Well I figured out number 1:

The advertising on Amazon is incorrect. When I check this router on this site directly, there's no mention about 3-in-1 at all.

Womp womp.

That definitely explains my confusion. Well, time to install the controller software until I get a hardware controller.

Yes, it can achieve link aggregation, but it is not the traditional meaning. Take a look:

Why failing to achieve bandwidth aggregation of multiple WAN ports by Speedtest

Your ISP modem would also have to support LAG (port channel) to create a 3.5G connection between devices.  If your provider has given you multiple IP's you could always asymmetrically load balance across the 2.5G and 1.0G connections.

Realistically, unless you are the one guy on the planet to pay for 3G and actually GET 3G, I think a single 2.5G port will work just fine for you :)

I'll look at the modem, I do remember seeing something about LAG in there. I only have a single IP however.

Regarding the speed, I actually get 3.2 down and 3.1 up consistently when I test it. That's why I was looking into seeing if it's possible to get more than 2.5 out of the home network using aggregation.

How are you testing it? I doubt you have more than a 2.5G physical port on the modem itself, so via some kind of 'internal' test? Does your test device have a 10G NIC?

I'm using the internal speed test on the modem, both my primary PC and my modem have a 10G port which also consistently shows 3.2 down and 3.1 up.

So why not just get the 8411 instead?

  @d0ugmac1 It's for a test-lab and it's outside my budget.

If I could have afforded the 8411, I wouldn't have even posted here.

Understood :). What is the make/model of your modem then?

It's a Bell Gigahub 4000. Nifty router to be honest, some neat features but doesn't support link aggregation it seems. I guess I may just one day end up upgrading to the 8411, but I was hopeful regardless.
