ER8411 OpenVPN/SSL VPN Issue
About OpenVPN/SSL VPN issue.
Today is 6 months since I reported the VPN error, it still hasn't been fixed. Do you have any more information about what's going on? Is there anyone working on this?
Do you know if the ER707-M2 has the same VPN bug?

hi, what's your status? now I've been using UDP for a few days against my own server, there hasn't been a single problem, the latest firmware version seems to work for my setup, my ER8411 has never been better with OpenVPN. But if I use TCP, it is super slow, so I hope that will be fixed as well.
another thing, are you using SSL VPN? I have not configured SSL on the router.

Apologies, I've been away and not testing or looking at my router.
I can confirm that when using te ER8411 as a client to connect to NordVPN, using TCP I get a stable and consistent connection, connected for days. The speed I am getting from TCP is around 50mbs down / 20mbs up, on a 500d/70u ISP connection... so pretty slow (though I was always led to believe that TCP is considerably slower than UDP anyway?), but better to be stable and a bit slow, rather then have the disconnects I'm getting with UDP.
When using UDP I get much faster speeds (400mbs down 50mbs up, or thereabouts, using a European Nord server, but get the constant disconnects still.
If you are getting decent, stable connections using your own OVPN UDP server, then it might well suggest (as @Clive_A has mentioned before) that there's a compatibility issue with NordVPN and the ER8411 using OVPN and UDP.
I have a ticket open and support are looking into it, though things have gone a little quiet for the last week. They are keen to know what OVPN server Nord are using, which is a sensible question, but I've just heard back from Nord and they are not keen to share this for "security reasons" - so we may have reached the end of the road with this. If TP-link are saying that they don't guarantee third party VPN providers (as is their right), and Nord aren't willing to provide some info to TP-Link to investigate then I guess it may be that, if TCP 'is' working, then that's the only option for now

For me it has been stable and fast with UDP to my own server, this didn't work at all before so there has been a change. at least against OpenVPN from PIVPN which I use, TCP on the other hand is very slow, I depend on TCP also until Wireguard comes up with a better solution on Omada..
So the ER8411 is slowly getting better.

it seems that my problem has been solved, I have now run against my own Openvpn server from pivpn for a few weeks without problems with UDP, the speed is good, probably only limited by the server running on an old PC. no drops or other problems on the VPN connection.
The OpenVPN server is not installed in compatibility mode as I had to do before, i.e. version older than 2.4
The problem now is TCP, it's terribly slow. 30-40 Mbps at most, I hope Tp-Link can look into this too :-)
I am now using this firmware on my ER8411, 1.2.2 Build 20240809 Rel.48592

That's great news! Looks like they've sorted UDP to work as they designed, which is great.
I'm still having connection issues with connecting to NordVPN via UDP, which is increasingly looking like some kind of compatibility issues between the router and Nord. I'm continuing to test with support, but all the things don't seem to be making any difference sadly. I get a very stable connection using TCP with speeds of up to 50mbps, but at least it remains connected.
I realise this isn't what the OVPN client is perhaps what tp-link had designed to be used for and therefore understand that is most likely isn't their problem. I have however had various other devices connected, via UDP, using openvpn.net software app and it's rock solid with UDP, so there is definitely something going on.
Will continue to work with support to see if there's a solution, and am happy to do so.
At least I can use TCP which is great.... I note that you are saying that the speeds are slower with TCP... I agree, but is this not a TCP thing? I was under the impression that TCP was slower than UDP, but to what extent I am not sure?
Things are definitely looking up though!
