Model: EAP225
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: V4_5.0.8 Build 20220613

Location: Private House

Installation: On the first-floor wall in the center of the building

Channels crowd: any other wifi 2.4GHz in wifi analyzer app on Android

Clients: <10 devices

Device state: brand new

Configuration: Stand-alone mode (without Omada Controller)

Problem description:

The stability problem refers to the 2.4 GHz wifi network. Internet speed falls from 60 Mb/s to less than 1Mb/s, sometimes the wifi network disappears and then comes back. The problem frequency is from one to a few times in one hour. Sometimes it's difficult to go back to the network. On the 5 GHz, the internet is stable with a speed of around 200 Mb/s. The problem occurs on different devices: smartphones, PC, Tp-link repeater TL-WA850RE. The distance from AP tested from 1 meter to 10 meters with the same stability problem.

Repair attempts:

The firmware was updated from V4_5.0.7 Build 20220120 to V4_5.0.8 Build 20220613. The device was brand new, so all settings were defaults. I tested different channels for 2.4 GHz (1,6,11,13), channel range set to 20 MHz (also default 20/40 MHz), and also decrease Tx power without any change. For me, it looks strange and it's like some hardware problem with the device. Can I do anything? Or should I contact with guarantee service?

I moved AP to another building and it started working perfectly with another client group. I investigated the previous building and found a client device that affects on the stability of AP. It was TP-Link TL-WA850RE. I disabled this device and now it's working fine. Thank you for your help!

  @kluszon

Hey

Welcome to the world of 2.4ghz..

Sorry but what you have described is fairly common and likely not an AP issue, rather a limitation of the frequency used (2.4).

In short the older 2.4ghz is pretty much saturated in almost all cases, there is a few things you can do but honestly.. 10 devices is really going to strain airspace for 2.4ghz

Try these first and see how you get on

1.  On the AP enable AirTime Fairness.  This will help negate any devices hogging the airspace, its a good idea for IOT devices and generally in most installations I would enable this on 2.4 by default (leave off on 5ghz)

2.  Check the channels in your area.  If you neighbours are on 1 try staying to 11, sadly its likely all channels have some interference already

3.  Keep at 20mhz channels, more capacity at the expense of speed

4.   Move as many devices onto 5ghz as possible..

In short, 2.4 is a pain!   you will see dozens of posts on the forums with people complaining the same issues you are having.

  @kluszon are you in control of the clients? If so disconnect all that you can and add back one at a time. See if the problem goes away with less clients. If it does start adding until you see the issue show up.  That will at least be a starting point.

My network consists of 4 EAP225 and 1 EAP610 wired. We have an average of 30 clients. 20 of those are 2.4 and we have no reported issues, but there are so many factors that you can't use one persons results as a base. My first impression would be interference from something.

Wish I could be of more help but start with process of adding one device at a time.

  @kluszon

This sounds similar to the problem experienced with the EAP245v3 v5.08.  Both units had f/w released at the same time, but some complained about issues with the 245v3, and I too had similar problems with both units (but I had taken my 225 offline).  I recently put my 225 back online and kept v5.07 due to this.  You might try rolling back the f/w to see if you still experience issues, if not, I'm sure the fix they made for the 245 will be rolled into the 225 as well.  The 245 has a beta available fixing the problem, but not the 225.

EDIT: I have my version numbers incorrect.  The problematic f/w version was/is 5.0.9.  So 5.0.8 is the one that should be ok.  Since you're on that version, there's probably nothing to try.

APs: EAP225v3, EAP245v3, EAP670, Controller: Linux, Primary Switch: T2600-28TS, Routing: OPNsense

  @Philbert

1.  Enabled AirTime Fairness didn't change anything in this case.

2. As I wrote before the location is a private house and I don't have any 2.4GHz networks around.

3. I set the channel width to 20MHz without any change for stability.

4. I didn't solve the 2.4GHz network problems.

For me, it's strange because after the factory reset AP is working perfectly for 3 hours with all devices on 2.4GHz, but after this time the problem is back. Moreover, I have EAP225 with hardware version 3 and there everything is working perfectly also on 2.4GHz!

Ah one of those random device plugged in that interferes with everything!

It was likely just forcing the retry and error rate high enough to kill the 2.4ghz, its a frequency known to not be forgiving..   Good find all the same and glad its working for you!
