Model: EAP245
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: Latest Firmware

Morning

I have recently installed two EAP245 access points using the following setup:

Virgin Media Super Hub 3 with 220Mb Download Speed

Cat 5e ethernet cable connecting router to Access Points (1 x 2 meters from router and 1 x 8 meters from router)

POE Injector that was supplied with the Access points

Omada OC200 controller with Mesh enabled.

Single SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz

Channel and Channel Width set to Auto

I am new to this level of networking (upgraded from BT Whole Home Wifi) but I have figured out the basic setup with the help of this forum.

My question is that when I connect my phone to the Access Phone to the Access Point I only get a maximum of 91MB download speed. When I connect from the same device and location to the Virgin router I get the full 220mb download speed.

As you would appreciate this is quite disappointing considering the investment and grade of equipment I am using. I have tried to adjust the settings but it is not making a difference. I have made sure there is nothing else connected to the Access Points when testing the speed.

Any advice would be appreciated!

  @Jav80

Make sure that the ethernet ports on your router where the EAP245s are connected, have negotiated 1000mbps (not 100mbps) speed.

If that's not the case then set your EAPs SSID to be different, connect your iPhone to the 5GHz SSID and test again.

Omada OC200 controller with Mesh enabled.

Single SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz

As you are using a single AP there is no need for the mesh to be enabled, this is only for multiple APs connected wirelessly.

However it does sound like the AP is connecting you in 2.4ghz spectrum and not moving you to the 5ghz..  have you enabled band steering on the controller?    If not its under SETTINGS > SITE > tick advanced features and enable band steering

Apologies my original post was not clear. I do have two Access Points. Thank you for directing me to band steering. It was something that I was looking to do but wasnt quite sure where to find the settings.

I have adjusted the settings as per your recommendation and unfortunately this still has not solved my low speeds through the Access Points!

@terziyski The virgin super hub 3 has gigabit ports.. I have also tried the separate SSIDs and I still have the same issue unfortunately:(

  @Jav80

Try replace the Ethernet cables. Make sure you are using Cat5e or higher level.

Also please connect EAP245 5Ghz wifi network. Some devices may not able to get high speed with 2.4Ghz wifi.

So I have made all the recommended changes on this thread and it seems like there is an issue with the cabling that my electrician has put down. When I use my own cables I get the full download speeds. When I connect my APs using my electricians Cat5e cables I get a 50% drop in speed. This drop is across both access points. I have also replicated the distance from the router using my own cables to make the comparison accurate as possible.

What could be wrong with the electricians ethernet cable? Could it be the crimp?

Like I posted - most probably your EAP245s are negotiating 100mbps (instead 1000mbps) speed with your VM Hub3 due to the cabling.

You pointed that VM Hub 3 is a gigabit router but in the end the negotiated ethernet port speed matters.

It could be either from cables or crimping. If you're able to re-crimp try that. If you can't just use your cables.

As a quick trial it might be worth grabbing a cheap cat5e / cat 6 cable from the local shop and directly connecting them, see if that is the issue.

You could also try forcing the bandwidth on the 5ghz to 80mhz instead of AUTO, others have reported that before but personally never seen that cause any problems.

Hopefully the cable sorts it for you!

I wanted to give an update on this as I have found a solution.

The electrician replaced the RJ45 connectors with a different brand and I now get maximum speeds.

Interestingly the access points immediately requested a software update before it gave the faster download speeds.

Thank you for all your help.
