Student residence internet outages
Hello,
I am a student and in charge of the internet network of a residence of 150/200 people for an engineering school.
So there are 4 internet boxes which are connected to the router tl-er5120, then 4 switches. And since a week the network is working very badly. From what I read it is probably that some people have brought wifi routers, which they connect to the ethernet socket of their rooms and so it makes conflicts of ip address.
I've been looking for the solution for a week but I can't find it...
What I don't understand either is that when I associated a MAC address with an ip address, these people still had internet cuts...
Thanks

Dear @Gum12,
So there are 4 internet boxes which are connected to the router tl-er5120, then 4 switches. And since a week the network is working very badly.
Do you mean the 4 internet boxes are connected to 4 WAN ports on one TL-ER5120 router and then connect the last LAN port to 4 switches in series? When you say the network is working very badly, do you mean the Internet is slow or the Internet is unstable? Could you please describe the network problem in detail?
From what I read it is probably that some people have brought wifi routers, which they connect to the ethernet socket of their rooms and so it makes conflicts of ip address.
Do you find the "wifi router" showing up on the DHCP Client lists on the TL-ER5120 router page?
If it's the wifi router that makes IP conflict with the TL-ER5120 router, I don't think the clients connected to the wifi router can get Internet access. But it's possible that the additional wifi routers add to a large network burden so that the whole network performance is poor.
What I don't understand either is that when I associated a MAC address with an ip address, these people still had internet cuts...
I assume that you are talking about the IP & MAC binding.
IP & MAC Binding, namely, ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) Binding, is used to bind the network device’s IP address to its MAC address. This will prevent ARP Spoofing and other ARP attacks by denying network access to a device through matching IP address in the Binding list, but unrecognized MAC address.
After you bind an IP address to a specific device with the MAC address on the TL-ER5120 router, then the device can only get the connection with the desired IP address. It will work when the device is connected to the TL-ER5120 router, but won't work if the device is connected behind another router.

When a device is connected to the router, it will ask the router to assign an IP address for himself, and the router will assign the address according to the DHCP pool. For example, now 192.168.100.2 is the first available in the pool, then your PC has 192.168.100.1; next time maybe 192.168.100.102.
If you associated MAC with an IP, then every time your PC will have 192.168.100.2.
You mentioned the students install wireless routers in their home, there may be IP conflicting. Home routers usually use 192 network, to avoid conflicting, you can change LAN IP to a totally different subnet, like 10.255.252.0/22.
This router should have been working for a long time.

Thank you @Fae
"Do you mean the 4 internet boxes are connected to 4 WAN ports on one TL-ER5120 router and then connect the last LAN port to 4 switches in series?"
Yes it's that I've added a network diagram.
"When you say the network is working very badly, do you mean the Internet is slow or the Internet is unstable? Could you please describe the network problem in detail?"
Yeah it was not clear I apologize.
Some people do not have access to the internet.
- No network detection
- Some detect the network but have "no internet, secured".
- But the majority have internet that regularly cut off by not detecting the network for 5 min, then it comes back.
" Do you find the "wifi router" showing up on the DHCP Client lists on the TL-ER5120 router page?" How you can detect them in DHCP client ? I have not found them.
About the IP Mac binding I understand better thank you ! However i made no ip mac binding but DHCP registration in DHCP panel.
Thank you again !

Thank you too @.-. !

Yes that what i understand.

Ok so i will try this after courses I will keep you informed.
Thanks !

Hi @.-.
First of all thank you for you your first answer it's was the solution, it works perfectly for now 1 week
"You mentioned the students install wireless routers in their home, there may be IP conflicting. Home routers usually use 192 network, to avoid conflicting, you can change LAN IP to a totally different subnet, like 10.255.252.0/22.". -> This is the solution
"So you have four fiber lines. Do you know the bandwidth for each line? The NAT throughput of ER5120 v2 is 350 Mbps, that is if each line has 100 Mbps, then the router is the bottleneck of this network."
So i have 4 lines with a 400 Mbps, so you say it's useless, because the NAT is 350 MBps ? I found on the internet that NAT is 800Mbps.

@Gum12 I'm afraid you got the hardware version wrong. 5120 V2 has a NAT throughput as 350Mbps.

Yeah your are right, but I never reach a 300 Mbits.
Internet outages start all over again and no matter what is changed or done. Anyone has no ideas ?
