VPN connection drops when download
VPN connection drops when download
Hi,
I had 2 TL-R600VPN connected through the Internet in L2TP/IPsec.
When I use heavy download, the VPN connection breaks then restart after a while.
It seems keepalive (or hello or whatever) is dropped and the VPN link lost.
Connection to the Internet is 300Mb/s (fiber) on one side and 1Gb on the other.
Is somebody had this issue? solved it?
Thanx in advance,
MrEd

Dear @M.Ed,
Please upgrade the firmware first, the latest firmware version is Build 20200313.

Hello,
I did it this morning and the issue is still there (one ~1GB download and the link fall :-().
Anyway, I didn't see anything about that in the fixed bugg list...
Any other avenue to explore?
regards,
MrEd

Dear @M.Ed,
To locate the problem, may I know your application scenarios and check the following information?
1. How do you find the VPN connection drops when you use heavy download? For example, do you just copy large files from a remote PC to a local PC through the L2TP site-to-site VPN connection, then the VPN connection drops after a while and the file transfer stops?
2. What's the application/software do you use for the downloading? What's the transfer speed during the process?
3. When the VPN connection drops, do you still get Internet connection from the 2 TL-R600VPN routers respectively? Do you have to restart both routers manually to recover the VPN connection?

Hello,
Sorry for my late answer, I was very busy last week... And thank you for your answer.
To answer your questions:
1) I note the issue during transfers of large files from a PCA (lan on routerA) to PCB (lan on routerB), it's exactly the example you gave. After the interruption I've to wait a reconnection from the router and I can see in the router logs the connection was dropped,
2) The problem happen when I use "scp" or "docker pull". In that last case, docker repo is outside the site and the router have to manage VPN + NAT,
3) Internet connection is still up for both routers, there is no need to restart routers, just wait for down detection and a new "call".
Because I suspect a flow management issue (no priority for connection management), I tried to use rate control set to 10Mb/s on LAN switch ports and it seems give a better stability but it's hard to manage when I use more than one LAN port.
Hope my answers are clear enough and hope you'll find a better solution than hard traffic shapping.
BR,
JM

There is a beta firmware available for this router, which may help for your case.
If you would like to give it a try, please check for the message I sent to you. Thank you.

First try between TL-R600 and linux, scp 390MB
- from TL-R600 to linux: OK@1.2MB/s (never works before without bandwidth constraints)
- from linux to TL-R600: OK@1.2MB/s
Sounds good! I now have to check it's OK between TL-R600 & TL-R600
