Hi.

I managed to set up dhcp relay using a t2600g-28ts switch as the relay agent and another one as the server, following the instructions in the manual. I then realized that I have another switch on the network, a tl-sg2424, which doesn't support dhcp relay. And I came up with the following setup:

Switch S1 - T2600G-28TS

- dhcp server - enabled

- ports 1 to 8 in vlan2, ports 9 to 16 in vlan3, and ports 17 to 24 in vlan 1

- added port 24 both in vlan2 and vlan3 and changed it to be a trunk port

- added L3 interfaces for each vlan

- added a dhcp pool for each vlan

Switch S2 - T2600G-28TS

- ports 1 to 8 in vlan2, ports 9 to 16 in vlan3, and ports 17 to 24 in vlan 1

- added port 24 both in vlan2 and vlan3 and changed it to be a trunk port

- added L3 interfaces for each vlan

Using this setup the dchp server is reachable from each vlan on both switches and gives the corresponding ip to each host, without dhcp relay.

I would like to ask if I'm missing something. Is dhcp relay a must if one has L3 switches with inter-vlan routing capabilities?

Now, I also have the old switch, tl-sg2424, without L3 features. Do you think it will work if Switch 2 in the above scenario is a tl-sg2424?

Thanks.

Alex M.

You will need DHCP relay only if the DHCP server is inside a VLAN / another network and you want to have it serve clients in other VLANs / networks, too.

Why not? DHCP requires just a common broadcast domain, no routing involved.
