Wireless connection is susceptible to environment interference, it may cause the unstable connection or SSID disappearance. Especially for 2.4G radio, it would be influenced by many interference from other wireless devices in our environment like Bluetooth devices (i.e. wireless speakers, mouse), Microwave oven and USB Interface.

In this situation, we need to do some wireless optimization for EAP products to reduce the disturbance.

  1. Channel and Channel Width Optimization

802.11 n/ac protocols support to bind two or more channels together to increase network bandwidth. Although the channel binding technology can improve the bandwidth, the wider channel also means more frequency resources are occupied and it may increase the wireless interference.

1)  For 2.4GHz radio, we can use 14 channels (EU version supports 1-13 channels, US version supports 1-11 channels), but there are only 3 non-overlapping channels in fact. We recommend to use channel 1,6,11 when deploying 2.4GHz network (with 20MHz Channel Width).

2)  For 5GHz radio, it has more channel resources which are all non-overlapping (with 20MHz channel width). We recommend to use different channels when deploying 5G network (with 20MHz Channel Width).

A suitable solution to reduce the interference is that:

For 2.4G radio, use 1/6/11 channels alternately with 20MHz channel width (HT20).

For 5G radio, use different channels alternately with 20MHz channel width (HT20).

             2. Transmit power Optimization

TP-Link EAP series allow customer to select different level Tx Power: Low, Medium, High, and Custom. A larger Tx power is not always better, because larger Tx power also means more interference to the adjacent APs.

In the actual wireless environment, if the distance between adjacent AP is much close(less than 15 meters), it’s recommended to decrease the Tx power for reducing the wireless interference. For example, if the Tx power is 25dBm, we can decrease it to 22dBm first for checking. If the wireless connection is still not stable, we can decrease the Tx power again.

Hi,

Im having difficulty, i have about 50 EAP225 Version 3.0 (firmware 2.4.0 Build 20181121 Rel. 55897) connected at my existing network running on Omada OC200 3.1.13 (firmware 1.1.1 Build 20190419 Rel.43063), may i know how do i configure all the EAP wireless channel running without overlapping to each other? and another question is my EAP will auto disconnect and reconnect back again, it happen once or twice every 30mins. My POE switch is working fine. Please advice. Thanks

Uchiha

Hi,

1. As the suggestion above, try to set the channel width to 20MHz, and 2.4G radio use 1/6/11 channels, 5G radio use different channels alternately.

2. "EAP will auto disconnect and reconnect back again". How many clients each EAP carries? Please make the PoE switch does not carry to much Omada EAP, or it may cause the insufficient power supply issue of EAP.

Hello jonas,

802.11n/ac use a different modulation scheme, which gives you 4 non-overlapping channels in the EU (channels 1, 5, 9 and 13, but see note¹ below). This (4 channels) would be the optimum channel distance to use in a 802.11n-only or g/n network (5 channels for 802.11b). Next, there is nothing wrong to use other channels than 1, 6, 11, provided that there is a suitable channel distance in multi-cell WLANs, e.g. for 802.11 b/g/n mixed mode you could also use channels 2, 7 and 12 or 3, 8 and 13 in a »non-overlapping« manner. Thus, the channel distance is important, not the mid-frequency.

Note¹: That's not strictly true, since center frequencies would need a distance of 25 MHz to be truly non-overlapping. However, the spectral mask defines only power restrictions up to ±11 MHz from the center frequency to be attenuated by −50 dBr, so the energy of the channel extends no further than these limits. Given the 4-channel separation, the overlapping signal on any channel is sufficiently attenuated to minimally interfere with a transmitter on any other channel. That's true for the 5-channel-distance rule, too.

But if everone else uses 1-6-11, that's fine! Then channels 3, 8 and 12 can be used by my APs alone.

@R1D2 Ya, your suggestion is much useful for EU area!!yes But for US area, since the available 2.4G channels is 1-11, the recommended channels is 1/6/11.

Yes, Questionmark and jonas, in the US you have fewer 2.4GHz channels and the 1-6-11 rule is best there, agreed. On the other hand, most people in the EU would be more than happy to have the max. EIRP allowed in the US (especially in the 5 GHz band) which sometimes is of more benefit than two additional channels in the 2.4 GHz band. laugh

If left in auto mode will the software select a good set of channels?  I have 6 eap in my house.

It usually does so. I don't know how big your house is, but you could further improve things by reducing Tx power of neighboring EAPs.

Rule of thumb: If the distance between EAPs is less then 15m, reduce Tx power and check the performance. WiFi heat mappers such as NetSpot (desktop version) are a big help for analyzing the performance.

I was gonna play around with that tomorrow.

Start at medium power?  I think they are defaulted to high.

Hi,

"Medium" may be much low. You can decrease 3dBm of the Tx power first for checking. Decrease 3dBm means lower a half of the Tx power, and decrease 6dBm means lower a quarter of the Tx power, etc.
