Everything is fine apart from the fact that I cannot access a few specific web sites such as google.com (other google domains such as .co.uk work fine). Grateful for any pointers.

Maybe you can check if your 2x4G connection are both able to access google.com and check if 2x4G connection both can work. 

Maybe the data that access the specific web sites are forwarded to the fix WAN port according to your policy routing, and this WAN port cannot access those web sites.

Yes both the 4G WAN connections can access google.com with no problems. But I appear to have solved it now by turning off ‘application optimised routing’ - not sure why this causes a problem but never mind.

The feature of ‘application optimised routing’ should be used for some connections that need to keep the fixed IP, and the data of one session will only pass one WAN port. Did not know why it will cause the issue, but you have provided experience for us to solve this kind of issue.
