Hello,

 

I am very new to this outdoor wifi thing. I recently (wrongly) bought an outdoor antenna thinking this is what I needed but have returned it. What I am trying to do is link the internet in my house to a shed about 100M away on the other side of the road. I chatted to TP-Link support and they said I need two CPE's. I have pretty much a clear line of sight between the house and the shed. I can mount the CPE's on poles outside each building facing each other. 

 

My questions are:

 

I have a TP-Link AC1750 Archer D7 modem/router in the house. I am guessing I connect one of the CPE's to this with an ethernet cable?

 

At the shed will be either a MacBook or an iMac. Do I connect the other CPE directly to this using an ethernet cable? No modem needed?

 

Should I be buying two CPE 210's or would two CPE 220's be better?

Correct. To be precise, you connect the PoE adapter's LAN port to the Archer D7 LAN and the CPE to the PoE port of the adapter.

Make sure to use a proper outdoor cable with grounding or ground the CPEs on the pole. Outdoor APs must have a proper ESD/lightning protection.

Yes, you can connect the MacBook/iMac directly, no switch or other devices needed.

If CPE220 is available from TP-Link in your country, I would recommend this model. Note that there are offers on greymarkets for CPE220 in countries, which don't allow use of those devices. E.g. in the EU you may not exceed the 20mW EIRP, therefore on TP-Link EU websites the CPE220 is not listed.

Thank you R1D2! I was hoping you may reply. You seem to know your stuff. I can get the CPE220 here in Australia. I will order two of them and make sure I either use the proper ethernet cable with grounding, or ground the CPE's on the poles.

You're welcome, Ludwig.

 

For outdoor cable with a ground wire see UBNT ToughCable. Its tiny RJ45 plugs fit perfectly into CPEs, which only have little space for it.
