Connecting Your Archer Router to a Starlink Gateway

Note: Before getting started, you must identify which version of the Starlink Gateway you are using. This will ensure that the setup process is tailored to your specific device.

Starlink Gen 1: Round Dish, Ethernet Adapter Included

If you have a Gen 1 Starlink System, the included adapter will allow you to connect your TP-Link Router Directly to the Starlink System without additional accessories or configuration.

Starlink Gen 2: Rectangular Dish (Ethernet Adapter Sold Separately from Starlink)

  • Please be aware that no Ethernet ports are available on the Starlink Gen 2 Gateway, and a Starlink Ethernet Adapter must be purchased separately. The Starlink Ethernet Adapter is a small, rectangular device that is plugged into the WAN port of your Router.

Connecting Your Archer Router to Starlink (Router Mode)

First, Enable Bypass Mode on Your Starlink Gateway

It is recommended that you first enable Bypass Mode on your Starlink Gateway. The toggle for Bypass Mode can be found in your Starlink App under:

Settings > Network > Advanced > Bypass Mode

  1. Open the Starlink app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap on the Advanced Button to reveal more settings.
  4. Scroll Down and Toggle the "Bypass Starlink Wi-Fi Router" to the 'ON' Position

Your Starlink Gateway will now be in Bypass (Bridge) Mode. Bypass Mode turns off the Starlink Gateway's built-in Wi-Fi network and routing capabilities. This allows your Archer router to provide its own wireless network and manage your devices' connections, which can improve network performance and give you more control over your network settings.

After Enabling Bypass Mode, Use the Following Steps to Configure Your Archer Router’s Network.

  1. Connect the Starlink Ethernet adapter to the Starlink Gen 2 Gateway.
  2. Connect the TP-Link Archer router to the Starlink Ethernet Adapter using an Ethernet cable.
  3. Power on the TP-Link Archer router and wait for the router to finish booting.
  4. Complete the Setup Process through either the WebUI or Tether App:

Method 1: Set Up Your Archer Router using the Web Interface (WebUI)

  1. Open a web browser and enter the TP-Link Archer router's IP address to enter its WebUI.

FAQ: How Do I Log Into the Web-Based Management Page of a TP-Link Wireless Router

  1. Log in to the TP-Link Archer router using the default username and password. The default username and password are generally printed on the router's label.
  2. Go to the "Internet" or "WAN" settings page from the router's web interface under the Advanced Tab.
  3. Select the "Dynamic IP" or "DHCP" option for the WAN connection type.
  4. Save your changes and exit the TP-Link Archer router's web interface.

Method 2: Set Up Your Archer Router Using the Tether App

  1. Open the Tether App on your phone and log into your TP-Link ID
  2. Scan the QR Code or Manually Connect to the Wi-Fi broadcast by your router.
  3. Proceed through the setup, configuring the time, router password, and network credentials.
    1. See Our FAQ: How To Setup a TP-Link Wi-Fi Router on the Tether App for Step-By-Step Instructions

If warned that a second router may be on your network, you may not have enabled Bypass Mode on your Starlink Gateway. Please Connect to the Wi-Fi network of your Starlink Gateway and Enable Bypass Mode from the Starlink App. If your Starlink Wi-Fi uses the same name as your new router, you may need to unplug your Archer router to connect directly to the Wi-Fi from the Starlink Gateway.

Why am I Unable to Access the Settings for my Starlink Gateway?

After connecting to your Archer’s Wi-Fi, you may find that you cannot manage the settings of the Starlink connection without first configuring a static route for your Starlink Gateway.

Follow the steps below to configure a static route for your network to access the Starlink management interface:

Please See this FAQ on Creating a Static Route to Access the Starlink Management Interface

Connecting Your Archer Router with Access Point (AP) Mode

Access Point Mode extends the wireless coverage of your existing network when the router is provided with a wired Ethernet connection. AP Mode will also allow you to use the wireless signal broadcast by the Archer Router while allowing your Starlink Gateway to manage your devices' network connections.

See the FAQ: What is the Difference Between AP and Router Mode?

  1. Connect the Starlink Ethernet Adapter to the WAN port of the TP-Link Archer router.
  2. Make sure that Bypass Mode on the Starlink System is DISABLED.
  3. If you have set up your Archer Router already, you may change the Operation Mode via the Web UI or Tether App:

Method 1: Set Up Your Archer Router in AP Mode using the Web Interface

See the FAQ: How to Configure a TP-Link Wireless Router as an Access Point via the WebUI

Method 2: Set Up Your Archer Router in AP Mode Using the Tether App

    1. Open the Settings Page for Your Router
    2. Tap Tools in the bottom menu
    3. Tap “Operation Mode” in the list of options
    4. Select Access Point
    5. Tap Save – After changing this setting, your router will reboot into Access Point Mode.

Ok, so starlink is active. Have older Linksys ea7500 that let starlink setup wifi but then that lan computers stopped working. I am sure it is double Nat and ip n wifi butting heads. Could not get into Linksys to try n see. So I bought ax1800.

Question is do I just plug into wan or do I need enable bypass first.

I must have the lan computers to work.

Confused about best way to setup ax, n which would be better wifi. Will lan computers work in access point mode. I am assuming the ax should provide better extended wifi than starlink gen2 but you will have to tell me. Need some help and advice and sequence to this setup before I do it. Thanks ahead of time

I believe that not enabling the bypass mode on the Starlink Router is what was causing your Double NAT.

Under both setup methods, your LAN devices should connect as expected.

For the Starlink router to remain as the main router, you will have to setup the AX1800 in AP Mode,

If you would like the AX1800 to be the main router, you will have to place the Starlink Router into Bypass Mode, which essentially turns the router/modem combo into only a modem.

To benefit from the features and wifi of the AX1800, I would recommend placing the Starlink router into bypass mode.

Hello,

I have a TP-Link OnHub TRG1900 that I'm looking to maybe replace my Starlink (first gen) router with. Just want to see if it has better coverage.

When i plug in the OnHub, it only flashes amber and the light above the white connection on the Starlink power supply doesn't turn on. I'm using known working cables, the OnHub does work (I've tested with a double NAT), and it's set to DHCP on the WAN port...thoughts?

Please someone with an actual answer help! I use Starlink to game and it works great. I have speeds over 180-200mbps. Recently as in like the last week I purchased AX1800 by TP Link and set it up using bypass mode on the Starlink. Everything seemed to work well except for the most important part...speed. I now haven't seen speed above 15mbps, and continually lose connection to the game. Please someone with knowledge what settings in the router can I change? Right now my router is a paper weight! I've used the DMZ, disabled other security features and still no improvement to the speed. Everything seems to lag now also! Back to straight Starlink for now. Please help!

I have Starlink at my mother's ranch that I set up using a TP-Link wifi router. I don't remember the model number on the top of my head, but we have Starlink gen 2 so I had to first purchase the Ethernet adapter from Starlink. After I have set up starlink like normal I went to the Starlink app and turned the starlink router into bypass mode. I waited a few minutes so that that change could occur.

I then set up my TP Link wifirouter by following their instructions to the t. At the point where it says to connect my ISP's modem I then connected the Starlink router which is now in bypass mode and connected it into the WAN port of the router. I have not changed any settings within the TP link router. I made sure I kept the same SSID and Passwords using that Tether app that the TP link router recommends.

As far as speeds? I guess, make sure dishy is clear and clean, check for obstructions. I also added deco 5M mesh access points throughout the house. I do plan on upgrading those to wifi6 accesspoints.

Worst case scenario, reset everything to factory and set up starlink first and make sure its running well then set up your TP link wifirouter.

I hope this helps.
